    Unable to install packages (Umet dependencies)

    Hey Guys, I couldn't find a solution after searching for about a half an hour on the forums so I made a new thread

    I'm relatively new to KDE and to Linux in general. I recently migrated my laptop to Kubuntu 12.04_x64 after my Windowsbox was corrupted.

    I *really* doubt any of this is relevant or will help but here is my Laptop's specs

    CPU - AMD Phenom II quad-core mobile processor N950 P940 (2 MB L2 cache, 1.60/1.70 GHz, DDR3 1066 MHz, 25 W
    GPU - ATI Radeon HD 4250
    RAM - 8GB
    HDs - One 320 GB SATA
    Optical Drives - One 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive

    Anyway, I've been running Kubuntu for about a week now, and am now unable to install any packages. I've experienced this problem before, and naturally tried
    $ sudo apt-get clean and $ sudo apt-get autoclean
    $ sudo apt-get -f install

    This did not work in the slightest. I am unable to install from Muon Software Center, Ubuntu Software Center, or using apt-get

    This is the error I'm recieving

    andrew@Andrew-Laptop:~$ sudo apt-get clean
    andrew@Andrew-Laptop:~$ sudo apt-get -f install

    When attempting to install anything afterword I am greeted by the now familiar
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
    The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    openshot : Depends: python-mlt2 but it is not installable or
    python-mlt but it is not installable or
    openshot-mlt but it is not installable
    Recommends: openshot-doc but it is not installed
    E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

    How can I fix this?

    What does "sudo dpkg --configure -a" tell you? Also, do you have any extra repositories, over and above the default repos?

        Just to be sure, have you run sudo apt-get update at all? If not, run that to refresh your package info, then try sudo apt-get -f install and sudo apt-get -f install

            I have, yes. Unfortunately it gives me a very similar error regarding the same 3 packages that are causing all the mayhem

              Openshot was installed from .Deb off their website. Reading throught it again I see that it needed to be installed through PPA. ---feeling stupid for not reading more carefully, tired or not.

              ppa-purge was something suggested by this thread askubuntu.com/questions/140246/how-do-i-resolve-unmet-dependencies--- I havent used it yet but was basically going down the list trying fixes. I installed it half-expecting to need it but decided to come here asking for help before I accidently rendered my system unusable.

                I uninstalled openshot
                $ sudo apt-get remove openshot
                updated and then ran $sudo apt-get -f install

                ... and it all seems to be working again.

                Thanks for the help guys!!! I'm glad it was a simple (however idiotic) user error
