    screen res too low trick

My screen res was too low. So I changed my monitor's horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. But sometimes when I boot up, the res is too low again. So, at the login prompt, I click menu, then restart xserver. So far, I have gotten my prefered res back again every time.

You might try eliminating all references in your xorg.conf file to any resolution other than the one you want to use. The others are superfluous anyway.
