Various desktop queries

Hello, After a long break I'm back with Kubuntu. I left when KDE 4.0 was released and went over to Ubuntu.
So how am I finding the latest version? Well it's been mostly good but I have had a few problems. It took me ages to find out how to switch off the transparent theme, my video card (ATI X1250) is not very good for 3D, only about 14fps.

But here are my questions:
Can I have the compiz cube but not have transparent windows?

The panel auto-hide does not work properly. On boot-up it works but after launching Firefox it remains stuck down and covers the top of the application window. The panel is at the top of the screen. Can I fix this?

Where can I find help on Activities? In the KDE Help Centre clicking on Activities takes me to Power Management

Here (KDE 4.7...4.9) the autohide is working without problems - tell a bit more of your hardware/settings/installation (kubuntu-desktop/kde-plasma-desktop/kde-standard/??).
