Google Earth tries too much gnome-libs

When I try to install google earth or skype from their .deb it I get this:

    Code:

I think this is not normal.... A few months a go I've installed this software with out installing all this stuff.... it tries to install libgnome-keyring0:i386... this cant be normal or is it?

Can anybody give some help/opinion on what's happening?

does the last install was on 32 bit linux?
it looks like it wants all the base libs for i386 machines...

Skype's latest package wants to install all the 32 bit compatibility packages unfortunately. There is no easy way around this.

Not sure about Google earth, but I am guessing the same situation arises and as it seems to be a gnome based app, and maybe specific to ubuntu, it wants to pull all that extra stuff in.

These really are 32 bit programs, so the packaging is calling for the i386 stuff so that they run in 64 bit. I don't know why they want all of it - the last version of Skype , the one from the ubuntu partner repo, did not install so much, the one you download from Skype itself always has

Not that it makes the current situation any better for 64 bit users, but the Linux version of GE is based on Qt, not Gnome.

So, there is no way to change this =( ... is there any future hope for this to be more friendly to kubuntu 64 system?

ia32-libs depends on ia32-libs-multiarch:i386, which in turn has several other dependencies, to the tune of 253 on my Quantal beta 1 machine. You can check for yourself with:
            Code:
            apt-get -s install ia32-libs-multiarch:i386
This performs a simulation run, showing the output of what would happen were you to actually install the package.

The only way to fix this would be for Google to do a better job of indicating dependencies in their package. Rather than taking the easy, brute force approach, they could indicate the specific 32-bit libraries that are actually required by Earth. This takes more time and places more burden on the person maintaining the package, however.

The transition to "multiarch" is proving fairly painful -- I think most of the pain for *buntu users is still ahead, although possibly by working them out in Debian sid first, we'll make life easier for the *buntus. Two weeks ago I lost both Skype and Googleearth, due to dependency and packaging issues around the needed ":i386" packages. At this point, I've got Skype back, and my bug report regarding libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 was accepted and traced to a bad packaging job on libxvmc1. When fixed, this should let Googleearth display again on my 64-bit Debian system with nvidia graphics (if there isn't another lurking bug). So, patience is going to be required to get through this transition, especially for these third-party packages that aren't packaged by the normal Debian and *buntu maintainers.

I just tried to install Google Earth (12.10).

1st by double clicking on the file in Dolphin. A windows opened and informed me that there are 270 !!! dependenies to be installed. I aborted.

Interestingly all works more or less well in 12.04 . . .

                  Any suggestions?

I think the choice is to install GE or not. If it calls for more that 200 pieces of software take a look at the number of MB needed. That's a far better indicator than the number of different pieces of software is.
