    upgrading

    Hello

I got the message, that some upgrades and security upgrades are available. So I started the job and got the following info:

    Code:
Die folgenden Pakete werden aktualisiert (Upgrade):
      accountsservice cups cups-bsd cups-client cups-common cups-ppdc ghostscript ghostscript-cups
      ghostscript-x gnome-games-data icedtea-netx icedtea-netx-common krb5-locales libaccountsservice0
      libcups2 libcups2:i386 libcupscgi1 libcupsdriver1 libcupsimage2 libcupsimage2:i386 libcupsmime1
      libcupsppdc1 libgphoto2-2 libgphoto2-2:i386 libgphoto2-l10n libgphoto2-port0 libgphoto2-port0:i386
      libgs9 libgs9-common libgssapi-krb5-2 libgssapi-krb5-2:i386 libk5crypto3 libk5crypto3:i386
      libkrb5-3 libkrb5-3:i386 libkrb5support0 libkrb5support0:i386 mahjongg python-software-properties
      software-properties-common software-properties-gtk software-properties-kde
42 aktualisiert, 0 neu installiert, 0 zu entfernen und 0 nicht aktualisiert.
I run a 64 system and wonder, why so many i386 files are needed.

In this context I may also put the question, why apt-get update checkes all the i386 repos? Here is my /etc/apt/sources.list

    Code:
    # deb cdrom:[Kubuntu 12.04 LTS _Precise Pangolin_ - Release amd64 (20120423)]/ dists/precise/main/binary-i386/

    # deb cdrom:[Kubuntu 12.04 LTS _Precise Pangolin_ - Release amd64 (20120423)]/ dists/precise/restricted/binary-i386/
    # deb cdrom:[Kubuntu 12.04 LTS _Precise Pangolin_ - Release amd64 (20120423)]/ precise main restricted

Is it possible, that I run too many sources?

Your sources.list looks normal. The reason the upgrade process is offering i386 versions of packages is because you already have those installed, likely to satisfy some dependencies.

To find out what depends on a particular package, you can use this command:
    Code:
    apt-cache rdepends --installed [i]package-name[/i]:i386
This means, "please list all installed packages that depend on the i386 version of package-name."

Unless you are a computer whizz and need the source code, you don't need the source code.

Put a # at the beginning of each line beginning deb-src in your sources list e.g.
      # deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted

Thanks for the tips. I followed the one from arochester.

What are the deb-scr repos for?

Source codes, if you want/desire to compile the apps yourself.

Thanks. At present, not for me...

When Kubuntu is installed, the active default repositories include the source code repositories. When you enable the non-active repositories in the Software Sources, the source code repositories are activated as well. I just delete them, as I don't do any compiling.
