changed display refresh now black screen

hi I am brand new to Kubuntu.

I was seeing screen flicker so I wanted to increase the refresh rate. I was told by a dialog box to restart xserver, (did not know what that meant) so I restarted.
now I have guessed that my monitor does not support 74 Hz because it said "out of range" and is just a black screen.

can someone guide me on what to do now?
I guess I have to boot to vga mode then try to set the resolution and refresh rate properly .
it was set to 1280x840 i think, and 60 Hz

how can I "test" a refresh rate?
or how can I "test" a video driver.

ok forget it guys, I just reinstalled all over again.

back to normal bad refresh rate, have no idea how to change it.
