you kneed root privalage to do that press alt>F2 to open the run box ........type in kdesudo dolphin ........be vary careful you can do anything now and wreck you system if you mess up .

open the split pane view and go to usr/lib/ and make the foler sane if it is not their ....then open it .........now in the other side go to usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane and you can drag and drop them over to usr/lib/sane .....you can probably just link them instead of copy .

      Hi Vinny,
Thank you very much for your advice. I will do so. I know that this permission is dangerous. But even without this permission I already have crashed kubuntu (I still think it is way better than Windows. I think in about 15 year nobody will talk about Windows anymore). I found a way to make a new installation way easier: I patitioned my hard disk three times (1 Root, 2 Linux Swap, 3 /home). This way I will still have 95% of the settings. And a reinstallation with all settings as they were before takes only 1 to 2 hours.
      Kind regards,
      Sigurd

I did the chicken run. I gave up trying to get my Canon scanner working, so just installed it under XP in a virtualbox.

          Hi Vinny,
I had no success with copying the files. How can I create a link from one folder to another? Perhaps this will work?!
          Regards, Sigurd

I never got my MP510 to work with SANE; but for your model, I found
            http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...04&language=yi

This may be a stupid question, but- what is the grade and lenght of you USB cable? It's plugged directly in o your computer, right?t

BTW-- to make a soft lnk in linux, use 'ln -s'

when you say you had no success ........do you mean it didn’t copy or the scanner still is not seen ?

as to the link when you drag and drop the file between the split panes one of the options is "link hear" .............in post #16 you refer to "libsane-pixma.so should be in" yet your file is libsane-pixma.so.1 .....if it is indeed looking for libsane-pixma.so then you could rename the link to that and see if it works.

              VINNY

PS yes (from jpenguin's link) did you try running scangearmp in a terminal ? or from the alt>F2 run box

                Hi Jpenguin,
                hi Vinny,
yesterday I already tried scangearmp. It is the same answer: No Scanner. And I mean that I could copy the files but it did not work: No SCanner.
Meanwhile I reinstalled kubuntu and I installed the drivers again. The printer driver works fine. The scanner driver is installed but it does not recognize a scanner. I will check the cable tomorrow. For the rest of this sunday I am tired.
                Have a nice evening,
                Sigurd

I have checked the cable. I use a brand new usb printer cable.
I just talked to Canon. They do not do any support for their Linux printer and scanner driver. But they did not mention that it is my risk to use these drivers. I bought the machine because it is not so expensive and they have driver for ubuntu.

Is there still any body with an idea to make the scanner working?
                Regards, Sigurd

I just talked to the shop I bought the device. They will take it back and check if the scanner is broken. If not they might change my order into another multifunction device. Just they have on sale the HP DeskJet 3050A. Does anybody have any experience with this device?
At least HP has a separated website for Linux users.
Please let me know your experience with such an HP device?
                Regards, Sigurd

                  Problem solved

                  Hi All,
I found out the following website: https://code.launchpad.net/~michael-...runk/+packages. There are the newest printer and scanner drivers for Canon devices. I have downloaded the scanner drivers (common and MP280series) and installed them using QApt. Afterwards I tried to scan with scanimage -L. But no scanner was found. Later I saw that now I have in Graphics the frontend ScanGear. And this frontend works fine.
PROBLEM SOLVED! Thank you to everybody who tried to help especially to Vinny and Batty. I hope that this website may help other guys with Canon printer, scanner devices too. I would like to mention that the service of Canon is extremly BAD.

                  Thank you again,
                  Sigurd

Thank You SigurdF for sharing your solution. It's always good to hear of successful outcomes, a lot of these type of threads just die out.

I installed the PPA you found, on a clean install, installed scanner drivers and it works perfectly.
Like you say it even adds a menu entry.

Thanks for not giving up and then for sharing your discovery.

I find the best thing to do when looking at scanners is to check weather they are natively supported by SANE without a driver My Epson Artison 730 works pretty good

Glad you got it working! :-)

                          Hi Batty,
Don't mention it. I think this forum is meant to help each other. You and others tried to help me. It's only fair if I tell now how it works.
                          All the best, Sigurd
