    Scanner driver installation help needed

    Hi,
I just bought the Canon PIXMA MP280 Copy, Printer, Scanner. From Canon I downloaded MP280series_printer_driver and MP280series_scanner_driver packages. I unpacked them. I installed the printer driver "cnijfilter-mp280series_3.40-1_amd64.deb" with QApt. And it works fine! I did the same with the scanner driver "scangearmp-mp280series_1.60-1_amd64.deb". The installation looked successful. But when I start AcquireImages or XSane Image Scanning Program I always get told that there is no scanner (Sorry. No devices found).
So, what can I do that the scanner will work too.
    Kind regards, Sigurd

      Still no success

      Hi Vinny,
Thank you for your reply. At first I checked if the driver is installed. I started the Software Management in System Settings and found the notice shown in attached Selection_002.bmp. So the driver is installed.
Next following your advice I checked Create under File in Gimp and I found "ScanGear MP" (scanning front-end GUI for Canon Multifunction Inkjet Printer). Gimp knows there is a scanner driver. But when I click on this line I get the reply shown in attached Selection_001.bmp.
I checked if the machine is doing a scan (copy) manually. And it worked fine.
So, what is wrong? What else can I do that scanning will work?
      Regards, Sigurd

is the printer networked (are you printing wireless) if so go to it's IP address and see if it has a scan page .........for instance I can go to 192.168.2.4 and get my printers web page with tools for working with it your printers address will be different .......you can find it in your routers setup under DHCP client list or similar.

          Hi Vinny,
No, the printer is not networked. It is directly connected to the laptop by a usb cable.

              Who can help?

              Hi,
              Thank you Vinny.
I just talked to the support of Canon. But they have no idea.
Does the driver Canon provides works with SANE? Their driver was meant for ubuntu 10.04. Did this version already know SANE or are there some changes of SANE so that this driver no longer works?
Who might be able to help?

Try typing scangearmp in Konsole and it should launch canon's scanner program.

                  Hi Batty,
I did as you advised. The result is the attached window notice.
                  Kind regards, Sigurd

                    Hi Teunis,
There is no folder /usr/lib64. There is only the folder /usr/lib. Here I found the files shown in the attached picture. Do you think that the creation of a folder /usr/lib64 and the copy of these files into this folder may solve the problem? If yes, I cannot create a folder in /usr.

But this is exactly what I think: a small change siince version 10.04 and the driver oof Canon does not work anymore.
So, shall I try it and how can I get permission to create a folder under /usr?

                    Regards, Sigurd

I had to install two files to get my MG5250.

                      sudo dpkg -i scangearmp-common_1.60-1_amd64.deb
                      sudo dpkg -i scangearmp-mg5200series_1.60-1_amd64.deb

Running scangearmp was the only way I could see my scanner. I added a shortcut to the menu.

                      Does sane-find-scanner see your scanner?

                      does sudo scangearmp work?

                        Hi Batty,
you describe the exact way. Only I had to use "...mp280series..." I have attached the notice I can see when I tried to install this "...mp280series..." driver without installing the common driver before (Selection_003). As you did I installed the common driver first and the "...mp280series..." driver second. But I simple used QApt. And it worked fine. When I check the installed software with Apper I can see that both drivers are installed. And Gimp puts the driver in their menu. Everything looks fine and it should work. And still Gimp or AquireImage cannot see the scanner.
But if I run sudo scangearmp on Konsole I get the notice shown in Selection_005 (attached).
Canon developed the Linux driver for RedHat and for ubuntu 10.04. I think they never again (until today) did anything with these drivers. But I think that kubuntu today (version 12.04) is a little bit different to kubuntu 10.04. Perhaps a folder is missing or different. So, everything works only the driver cannot find something it needs to see that there is a scanner driver installed. And that is what I need to know and how I can change this?
                        Kind regards, Sigurd

                          Strange

                          Hi Batty,
I did run sane-find-scanner as you advised. And look what came out: Selection_007. So it detected the scanner. And it recommanded to run scanimage -L what I did. Now it gets strange again. Please have a look at Selection_008. This is the result.
                          What is wrong here?

your sane-find-scanner seems to have found two!
                            vendor 0x04a9 is your scanner.

scanimage -L shows no scanner for me, even though mine works!

I'm not sure I have any more ideas i'm afriad

                              Hi Batty,
Meanwhile i found the sane project too. And I found that 0x04a9 is my driver. And they say that all is completed and should work fine. But there I saw that the library libsane-pixma.so should stay in the folder usr/lib/sane. There is no such file. But I found the following files in the folder usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane/libsane-pixma.la and .../libsane-pixma.so.1 and .../libsane-pixma.so.1.0.22. I tried to copy them into the folder usr/lib/sane. But that action was denied.
                              1) May it work if I copy them into the folder usr/lib/sane ?
                              2) How can I get permission to do so?
                              Regards, Sigurd
