Can you try running systemsettings from kosnole, and try to open Application Appearance --> GTK Configuration, maybe it outputs something useful.
Missing icons certainly shouldn't cause any hangs.

Well as soon as I installed the missing themes the stability issues disappeared. However, I somehow managed to break all my gtk3 themes but all my gtk2 themes still work fine. Any ideas? I can grab the output tomorrow if needed(which I am sure it will help).
