    Password authentication won't allow keystrokes

Using latest KDE Desktop on Ubuntu Precise.
My keyboard works perfectly, but suddenly I cannot type anything in the Password authentication box - for anything!
I turned off Wallet but the problem still exists. Sure would appreciate some constructive suggestions!

Yeah, I've had this happen a few times too. I can't remember for sure how I got around it, but I think you can just click the login arrow button (to the right of the input boxes) with the password left blank. It will fail, of course, but the next time you try to log in, it should accept input.

Failing that, click the blue down arrow on the bottom left of the login dialog, and choose something, like default, or 'last session' and then click the login button. Again, it will fail with no password, but it should 'wake it up' for the next time you try.

Thanks for your reply - unfortunately neither choice works - there is no blue arrow, only "Details", that shows vendor as Apt Daemon - that is no help, but it may be if I knew what to do. The only choice is Cancel.
      (grabbing at straws here!!).

You are getting the login dialog with the top line for the account name, and the second line for the password?

It is nothing to do with logging in - that is automatic. It is EVERY time (eg updates install, starting Synaptic or anything else that asks for password authentication).

Ah. However, I think I made a reasonable (but wrong) assumption.

I see you've received another suggestion. Lets see how that works out.

That's the login method when not set to auto. The other pass authenticity only asks for password & text box.

Re: system settings -> account details -> password & user account and look for the Password Prompt section.IT IS NOT set to "show nothing".
                But---still same problem!!

I'm not familiar with that. When I have my machine set to auto login, it never asks me for anything. It just boots into my user account.

At what point are you being asked for a password? Is this to log in to the wireless network? To install new software?

This might seem like a dumb suggestion, but is the screen just not showing your keystrokes? If so, this is normal for linux, as added security (so no one can see your password over your shoulder). Try typing your password then clicking 'ok', even though you can't see it, that should work.

Don't most of the password input boxes in Kubuntu show large dots for each letter?

Some of them do, some don't. For instance, I believe (though it's been a while since I've seen the default) the default login doesn't show dots, only a blank space. Also, the terminal doesn't show any dots for password entry. No one but you knows how many caracters your password is. I remember it drove me nuts the first couple of times I used linux.

Thanks guys! I LOVE DUMB SUGGESTIONS - ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY WORK!!
tHE system settings -> account details -> password & user account and look for the Password Prompt section is set to show 1 bullet for each letter.
When typing the password, it does not show any bullets - so I assumed it was not accepting any keystrokes! BUT IT DID WORK.
Thanks for all your suggestions - you've made my day!!!
