    can't record "what you hear"

I've been trying to record sound from youtube videos or any other sound, which I am hearing on my machine, and failed. whenever I select "mix" as a capture source in alsamixer, I get terrible feedback like noise and nothing else. Tried to install pulseaudio - results are the same. I have SB Live 5.1, Kubuntu 12.04. Mic recordings are fine. Please advise me some directions how to solve this or where to post this problem to find help.

I have no trouble recording whatever goes through the sound card with Sound Recorder. You will also need pavucontrol to control & adjust the input levels.
Ok, got it: Ashes come from burning.

I think, this could be a soundcard driver issue. what soundcard do you have?

        It's an onboard Intel chip.

Let me add just few words more: when you start Sound Recorder, press record to record any current sounds going through the sound card. Then run pavucontrol(which is designed to control pulse audio) and choose recording tab. You will see sliders which you use to adjust recording level. Set these and you should be good to go.

sound recorder doesn't show any volume level here, pavucontrol image is the same as yours, with alsa plugin showing some volume changes, while chromium browser is playing sound.

Ok, weird. I didn't cover the steps thinking that you'll find your way around once you're told about the combo. Here is a more detailed info.

I could never make Audacity do a recording and was also thinking about drivers and the soundchip's incapabilities.
So, if that doesn't cut it, then...

              Bye

Audacity works well and will export the recording to a large variety of formats BUT you half to get the right input selected in it and the right output (or input device as it were) selected in pulseaudio volume control.

@hear that was pulse in Audacity's input selection and Monitor of built-in Audio Analog Stereo in pulseaudio volume controls input device tab.

play around with it while something is playing (youtube) untill you see sound wave forms appearing in Audacity when you press the record button .

the feedback like noise can be that your mic volume is up to high .....it will do that @hear if it's up to far

my initial thought was the same, so i unplugged it btw, seems like noise gone after i set AC97 level (onboard audio) to zero in alsamixer. but i still can't record anything. would be great if someone with the same audio card appeared in this forum
