a not responding application causes the whole system to hang!!!!

I remember that my friends used to make fun of windows, that sometimes needs to be restarted due to a not-responding application (cuz it makes OS to hang and in a not-responding situation)
now i have exactly the same situation with my newly installed kubuntu 12.04 (i had this problem with kubuntu 11.10 too, but i thought a new and fresh installation of new version of this dis. will fix that problem)
    ...
now whenever i open "GoldenDict" (i've installed it from repository) and press "pronounce word" button "MORE THAN ONCE", GoldenDict goes in a non-responding situation AND it causes the whole OS to hang, then : no button works, no "ctrl+alt+esc" to be able to terminate any application, no "ctrl + alt + delete", no nothing .
however i just found out that i can switch to consoles (ctrl+alt+F1 to F6) in this situation.
    but isn't that FUNNY?
since Windows XP, i'd never had this problem with Vista and Seven, and now i'm totally surprised that why this can be happened to a state of the art linux Dist. ?

i'm not complaining, but searching for a solution (except never pressing "pronounce" button, which is my current fix ), i'd like to know what one should do in such a situation.

Sometimes, bugs in an application do cause them to go haywire, requesting memory like there's no end. Once your machine goes down that lane, there isn't a simple way to recover it, short of powering it off forcibly.

A fortress-like operating system like Linux isn't supposed to die, and yet it does...

    GoldenDict at here

At here the pronounce word seems to work without problems (clicking as a mad).

Are you using the Phonon or the MPlayer or something else for the playback ?
    Are you using pulseaudio ?
    Have you tried ?

that's exactly what i mean, "A fortress-like operating system like Linux isn't supposed to die"

      i'm using Phonon,
and i dunno why it's working there,
but try it more that once, 3-4-5 times,
however here, after second or third time, the system is frozen like hell.
      really why?
i think it's one of the main duty of OS, to prevent such a ridiculous thing to be happened.
at this point, i believe both mac os and windows are doing better that linux,
also the "kwin" sometimes encounters errors and disables some desktop effects, when i want to add widgets, ( in this case, again i believe mac and windows are doing better, as OS graphic interface are not broken as easily as linux )
but i definitely believe that there must be some solution for them.

Speculation: The problem could be: GoldenDict, Phonon, Pulseaudio, etc...

        i'm using Phonon
... and if you try the playback through a mediaplayer ?
VLC, MPlayer, Dragon Player, etc ...
        Still hanging ?

What if you disable the pulseaudio ?

        Is there a spike in the CPU/Mem load/usage ?
Maybe this can be examined by capturing the top output: http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2009/10/...adable-format/ or http://www.howtoforge.com/extract-va...-and-plot-them
