Steve I have to agree that my OP was lacking but later saying I want *full control* should be sufficient. I am open to hearing alternative meanings of the phrase is pretty self explanatory imo.

and when we ask for more information, you chastise us for not answering the question?
When sufficient information has been provided, yes. More so when 95% of the thread seemed to be about criticizing my request rather then trying to help.

Then when we take the opportunity to add additional background information for the benefit of all members, you presume to divine our intent with language like "soapbox" and "annoying nitpicking"?
For the benefit of all members? It was a great explanation, but it seemed more like lecturing me on the specifics of networking. If that's not the case, I apologize for the soapbox comment. As the old saying goes, it's not what you say, it's how you say it.

I realize you're new here, but you aren't getting off to a very good start.
The feeling is mutual so to speak.

We can go around and round, but I have my point of view and you have yours. Can we leave it at that and let the thread get back on topic? It's not that I don't generally value information or opinions or I wouldn't have learned linux to the extent I have. However, I came here looking for an answer to my question. If it wasn't sufficient information, simply ask for more information, and leave it at that. Keep it simple.

Hmm my take on this really really old topic (google zone alarm linux and note the dates) is that there is little interest in these as there is little need or demand for them - the aggressive pop-up warning type of tool that is. Not that they don't exist, they do.

To add another penny, and I say this with no malice or detriment intended, you really aren't controlling things, really you are reacting to events. hopefully, however, these sort of tools will lead to a better understanding of the whys and hows (since most are using iptables) so the eventually you can turn off your router's nat firewall and have real and full control over your network
