We can go around and round, but I have my point of view and you have yours. Can we leave it at that and let the thread get back on topic? It's not that I don't generally value information or opinions or I wouldn't have learned linux to the extent I have. However, I came here looking for an answer to my question. Hmm my take on this really really old topic (google zone alarm linux and note the dates) is that there is little interest in these as there is little need or demand for them - the aggressive pop-up warning type of tool that is. Not that they don't exist, they do.
To add another penny, and I say this with no malice or detriment intended, you really aren't controlling things, really you are reacting to events. hopefully, however, these sort of tools will lead to a better understanding of the whys and hows (since most are using iptables) so the eventually you can turn off your router's nat firewall and have real and full control over your network
