For chrome (or firefox), you can Ctrl-T for a new tab.

I don't see a problem with Kate or other KDE packages.

Unity is not a Kubuntu desktop interface -- you might have more luck with Unity questions on Ubuntu Forums.

Have you tried clicking the middle-mouse button or depressing the scroll wheel by chance?

Is this just not working for chrome or do other apps not open a new instance as well?

This link may help you out further.
If not I suggest asking there...

But why -- what is the point of that? I'm looking at chrome with 7 tabs open -- no problem. And it's all on one desktop, so I can run skype or my Windows VM or Amarok or something on the other desktops.

mybe i want to copy and paste between 3 documents into the one im editing, or stream through youtube videos while chatting with someone on facebook and in another window and keeping an eye on a weather map... tabs are great doing doing 1 view at a time, they completly hide whatevers one the other tab... theres a reason i have 2 monitors, not being able to have more then 1 copy of a program open is a major step backwards. im sure you can do it, they woudlnt be that stupid to get rid of a basic os feature, im just having trouble figuring out what went wrong in the upgrade where these settings might have been changed etc. not to mention that i have dead space on 1 monitor now because they are physically different shapes and the resolutions should be different and things dont look sharp since 1 monitor is `120hz native but the whole things now stuck at 60hz because the one monitor cant run at 120 thus, no option for it.

On a stock KDE 4.7.4 desktop, on Debian, I can launch a second instance of chromium-browser on a different desktop than the first instance is running, and it opens a single tab in a new window. So I think your problem is with Unity, and that should be something that you can get help with at Ubuntu Forums.

                  Try:

                  * Middle-click the application icon in the Unity launcher
                  * Right-click the application icon and look in the pop-up menu for something like "Start a new instance" or "Open a new window"

                  Working...
