    Installation Problems

    Hi

As I'm posting here you can probably tell that I'm a newb to this Linux malarkey. My problem is that I cannot seem to get my computer to boot into the live CD or DVD to either test as a live distro or to install. I get as far as the initial splash screen, press enter to go into the live system, the screen goes blank and then up pops the following: "Loading /casper/vmlinuz..." and "Loading /casper/initrd.lz...", then "Ready" with a flashing cursor beneath. This is where it hangs (the longest I left it was for a couple of hours with no joy).

I know that the DVDs and CDs are ok and have been used previously elsewhere to install and investigate as live with no problems. My system consists of an Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.67 gh (not overclocked); Asus P5K SE/EPu mb; 8GB RAM; NVidia GeForce 8800GT; 1TB Samsung HD103UJ hdd; with Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on a single partition (currently).

I have tried booting into my Windows system dvd and this works fine.

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

    Hi....

    Welcome to the forums

I'm not sure if you've already done so but you can check out the Ubuntu installation guide here. You would just need to find the Kubuntu equivalents to the options and solutions it provides.

    Hope this helps...

First, verify the md5sum of the downloaded ISO file.

Then you need to burn the ISO image to the blank CD (NOT an RW) at the slowest burn speed your software offers, and use "DAO" mode.

Try again with a verified ISO file and a slow-burned CD. If that doesn't solve it, we can dig deeper.

Thank you both ardvark71 and dibl. Sorry for the tardy reply to both your suggestions but I have been busy trying to find employment for the last couple of weeks! I think I may have been successful on that front. As to my installation problems, I resolved them by firstly taking on board what you both suggested and then trying an old copy of kubuntu that I knew was fine from about 2 years ago. This appears to have done the trick for now.

Again... Many thanks for your help chaps!
