Alright. I thought Nouveau was to be listed in Additional Drivers.

Everyone, I want to thank you for helping me. Even though it was a simple fix i spent five days trying to repair, my screen is beautiful and I learned a lot about the operating system. I broke it so many times and spent hours on end, but now I know what to do in case it crashes again

Onward 12.04 (when it is stable)!

It should be built into the kernel. However, you could also be using the vesa driver. You can do lsmod in a terminal and see what shows for video.

Thank you everyone. I am one happy noob!
        Hi...

The only problem is that with either the Nouveau or VESA driver, you will not get 3D acceleration.

The Problem seems to be present only with generic non pnp monitors,Sharp Aquos 37 allows up to 1920x1080@60hz Samsung 7e will allow resolution up to 1280x1024@60hz while KDS k770 will max out at 640x480@59.94hz with option to change to 800x600@60hz however the resolution does not change upon selecting new resolution. Adding newmode to xrandr with non pnp monitors has no effect. When trying to apply newmode from xrandr on nonpnp monitor program cant find modeline

Tested on Ubuntu 12.10 i686 Acer Aspire X3300 Embedded Nvidia 8200 GPU (aka NVidia Geforce 9200)

Monitors tested: Samsung 7e 17" CRT - via VGA KDS @View k770 CRT - via VGA Sharp Aquos 37 LCD - via HDMI

I ran into this exact problem when i decided my monitor was too dark and opted for a brighter monitor. Immediately after connecting the new KDS monitor nvidia xsettings could not read EDID and reverted to 640x480 with max 800x600 resolution. Switched back to the Namebrand PNP monitor and 1280x1024 resolution immediately restored, without need for changing settings.
