    Stuck in 640x480

Okay, this noob needs some help again. I have had awesome success with my laptop and Kubuntu, but now I have been trying really hard to get it on this old desktop and works great. There is one problem. I am stuck at 640x480. I have been trying to fix this for four days now. and reading as much as I can, but no luck at all.

I have tried editing the xorg.conf file and failed miserbly. Both times I have got it editted and reboot, the OS crashed and had to reinstall, which is no big deal except the frustation

I have an nVidia GE5600XT and my monitor is a Samsung 712N.

Here is a link to my manual. http://www.retrevo.com/d/ds/progress...20332343121107

Will someone please tell me what my xorg.conf should look like?

    Hi...

Nothing comes up with the link you provided. Could you provide a more direct link? Also, could you open a terminal and post the results of the following command....

    Code:
    lspci
Also, what driver and version did you install for your card?

    Regards...

I am assuming you have installed the Nvidia drivers.

Yes, I installed the additional driver recommended.

Here is a better link http://www.retrevo.com/s/Samsung-712...78bh735/t/1-2/ and click on the greeb tab that says Get The Manual. It asks for an email address but it is not required.

            James,

Start by looking in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. It will show you what driver is being loaded. You may not have to use an xorg.conf file at all unless you want or need special performance settings or have an "exotic" setup (unlikely).

Open a terminal and enter all these commands one at a time. Then post back to output from each and we'll go from there.

            xrandr -q
            cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep Driver
            dkms status

            Please Read Me

Alright, thank you. I will be back soon. I have to reinstall becuase I screwed up.

Update: I am currently reinstalling. This will not take long and I do not have anything to worry about with the hard drive. This computer does not have any OS on it, including WIndows (I am using my laptop to type)

Here are the specs for the montir that I can currently provide while Kubuntu is reinstalling
              Max resolution 1280 x 1024x75
              Optimal: 1280 x 1024x60
              Horiz: 30-81
              Vert 56-75

This is what I am doing:

              1. Fresh reinstall from Live CD.
              2. Install all updates manually through Konsole.
              3. Install recommended nVidia driver.
              4. Restarting computer and will prvide xorg.conf text and /var/log/Xorg.0.log file text.

The Nvidia Driver 173.14.30 is reported to be very buggy, at least on prior versions of Ubuntu. What happens if you uninstall it and use the default noveau driver? Does your resolution seem correct?

No, its a 1280x1080 monitor, but ideally, I would have it at 1024x768. I am taking a risk and upgrading to 12.04, but i doubt that would fix the issue. Since my desktop is my "play box" I am willing to take that huge risk.

The open source driver also doesn't give you the right resolution? The proprietary Nvidia 173 is broken in 11.10. A lot of people report success by uninstalling the nvidia 173 driver and using the open source noveau driver.

I never had any trouble with the nvidia 173 series drivers in the past. According to nVidia, you are using the correct driver. From what I read on the net, that monitor has trouble with EDID. Before dumping desktop effects completely, you should try a fully developed xorg.conf. Have you tried using nvidia-settings yet? If not, do so.

If you still get no joy, try an xorg.conf something like this:

                        Code:
                        # Manually created xorg.conf

                        Section "ServerLayout"
                            Identifier "Layout0"
                            Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
                            InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
                            InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
                        EndSection

                        Section "Extensions"
                            Option "Composite" "Enable"
                            Option "RENDER" "Enable"
                        EndSection

You guys are not going to believe this. I only REMOVED the nVidia driver, rebooted and got BEAUTIFUL 1024x768. LOL. I did not even install the Nouveau driver!

I am not going to mess with anything else. No use in fixing something that is not broken!

Thank you everyone. I am one happy noob!

After removing the nvidia driver, it automatically should have reverted back to the nouveau driver (it's installed by default). Glad it works!
