alien cant find my rpm

Hello,

So ive been trying to install softwares not avalible in the software center and I installed alien but whenever I try and access the file with
sudo alien -i package_blah.rpm
or convert to .deb file with alien it says file "..." not found originally It was in tmp so I saved it to downloads and that didnt work, I have looked at multiple sites that explain how to do this, most recently this one https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RPM/AlienHowto but
basically all that I have looked at are the same and I had no luck finding anything on here so yeah

Hi...

I might be asking the obvious but are you first changing directories to get to the file in question before typing in "sudo alien -i package_blah.rpm?"
