When booting my computer, it stops at a command prompt: "grub rescue>".

    Kubuntu 11.10

I am unable to find anything that I understand relating to "grub rescue>". I posted but did not get a response that I understand or could implement. I have since attempted to fresh install from a Live CD. After confirming that the CDROM is first in the boot order, and with the Kubuntu 11.10 Live CD in the CDROM, the computer continues to stop at the same point in the boot process:

    error: no such device: eb73ef6b-968d-493a-9b95-e5b600509d62.
    grub rescue>: _

An acquaintance told me that my HDD was broken. I purchased a new HDD and attempted a fresh install. Again the computer stopped during the boot process with the following error:

    error: no such device: eb73ef6b-968d-493a-9b95-e5b600509d62.
    grub rescue>: _

    Motherboard: ASUS Mempipe M3N-HT Deluxe
Processor: AMD Quad Core 2300mhz Black Edition
    Memory: 4gb Axiom ECC ddr2 800mhz
    500gb SATA II HDD
    TB SATA II HDD
    TB SATA III HDD
    DVDRW SATA (2ea)

This happened after booting following an update approximately a month ago. Thanks for any help you may provide.

When you installed did you install grub to the mbr? Did you format the partition you installed to? Also you might want to setup the bios so that the drive you have installed linux to is first in the hard drive boot order. Then reinstall. If you install to later drives in the boot order you can have errors like this as it may be looking for partition on a drive that has changed order.

I trust Microsoft about as far as I can comfortably spit a dead rat.

the string of letters and numbers in the error is the UUID of a hard drive partition that grub cant find not the cd/DVD drive you were trying to boot from........for some reason the cd dosent want to boot (it seems from the error)ether the cd is bad or the bios dident take the boot order change.

agin grub is looking for the same partition it cant find.
you seem to have 3 HD's in the box the bios will be calling one as the primary drive and is the one it will try to boot from ..... and is ware grub was installed to the MBR of.
IF you changed the partitioning scheme of the drives the UUID's may change or if you installed Kubuntu to a different drive or partition and did not reinstall grub to the MBR of the primary drive you will get this error .....during the installation the drives will be listed something like ..... /dev/sda this is the primary drive and if you have several partitions on it it will be /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3 ect ect /dev/sdb will be the second drive and so forth .
so if you did a reinstall on say /dev/sdb2 you would still wont to make sure grub got installed to /dev/sda.

the first thing I would do is get a live cd to boot and check what it seas the UUID's of the drives/partitions acualey are ....the blkid comand will tell you
      Code:
      sudo blkid
      like so
      vinny@Vinnys-HP-G62:~$ sudo blkid
      [sudo] password for vinny:
      /dev/sda1: UUID="89534f2e-ad31-4941-87b0-22e9875efac8" TYPE="swap"
      /dev/sda2: UUID="686ed85e-a21b-4a72-aa03-5e9b6c7d50b0" TYPE="ext4"

        Dear Vinny,

Thank you for your kind and thorough reply. I am not in a position to do what you advise. First, I am unable to get to a normal; command prompt. I am only able to get a grub rescue>.

I followed the link to the Grub2 site and have located the instruction for a grub rescue> repair, but I am not technically able to understand what I believe are probably generally understood instructions. When I enter the 'ls' command, I get the following:

        (hd0) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos4) (hd1, msdos3) (hd1,msdos2) (hd1,msdos1) (fd0).

Commandline results from the entry, grub rescue> set is as follows:

        prefix=(hd0,1)/boot/grub
        root=hd0,1

When I read this result, I believe I recognize the location of the Operating System as (hd0,1). I am not knowledgeable enough to be certain.

There are three hard drives in my computer:

500GB SATA II identified as SG1 which only contains the Stargate SG-1 TV Series.

TB SATA II which contains 15gb partition containing the Operating System, 20gb swap partition, 500gb /home partition, the balance of the drive is a partition identified as /svpersonal.

TB SATA III which was purchased and installed, because I was told my TB SATA II drive was probably defective. It is completely empty of data at this time.

When I entered the command ls (hdX,Y)/, ls (hdX,Y)/boot, and configfile (hdX,Y)boot/grub/grub.cfg, the reply returned for each command was 'error: no such disk for the first 2 entries and Unknown command 'configfile' for the latter.

When I entered the command grub rescue> sudo blkid, the reply was Unknown command 'sudo'.

Instructions in the Grub2 site included several other commands, however I am aprehensive of attempting any of them without further instruction from you or another expert. It appeared that I could remove grub and reinstall, but I fear I could remove something very important and unrecoverable without more knowledge and experience. Additionally, I do not know what would happen to existing configurations and data paths, if I removed and replaced grub.

If you are willing to continue to help me, I will probably need instruction using baby-steps or cut-and-paste instructions, when using the command line.

I am unable to boot to the CDROM drive to re-install from the Kubuntu 11.04 or .10 LiveCDs, which is a task I can perform, if the LiveCD opens (which it does not seem to do).

OK I think then that you will half to get the cd to boot if you cant understand the grub rescue instructions .

at some point you did get a cd to boot .....that is how you installed the first time right ?

check the boot order in the BIOS again and make sure you save your changes when you exit the BIOS setup.

be sure your cd still works....(maby it got scratched up)....try booting it in a different box.

and watch carfuly when you power up the box sometimes thars a F key you can hit to pick a boot device.

wile you are at the grub rescue> prompt you can use that ls comand to look into eatch device that grub can see ......... frome what you have listed it's only seeing 2 hard drives hd0 with 1 partition and hd1 with 4 partitions............. so typing
          Code:
          ls (hd1,1)/
should show you the contents of the first partition on hd1 .....which is where I suspect your system is.

if you see vmlinuz and initrd.img in there we may be on track so try it for eatch of the partitions on hd1 untill you find them and we will go frome thare ......+ get a cd to boot .

            It is me again, Shabakthanai

I found that my Live CD was somehow defective. I downloaded and am attempting to install the new Kubuntu 11.10 64bit Live CD right now. I have entered the 'Install Kubuntu' portion of the Live CD. When I get to the partitioning portion of the installation process, the 4th partition of the process, the Operating System converts to the Live CD screen and aborts the installation process.

I have clicked on the Kubuntu Install Icon on the 'Try Kubuntu Screen', however when installation gets to the same point in the installation process as previously, the Operating System again aborts installation and returns to the 'Try Kubuntu Desktop'.

This is a new and confusiing problem, I have never before experienced.

I was convinced that I would be able to install Kubuntu fresh, so I made the attempt. I am not sure whether the Boot partition has been formatted, but I don't think so, because I was unable to comlete the partition process prior to the system abort. Nevertheless, I am now able to get to a konsole, if that would make repair of the Operating System easier. I will have to work from the Live CD though.

Do you think that this is an indication of HDD failure or perhaps another defective download of Kubuntu 11.10 64bit Live CD? I mention the possibility of HDD failure only because it was suggested by another expert. I am not going to follow that path of thinking because I am working with you now, I am just wondering about that as a possibility. If you recommend downloading the OS again and re-trying the installation, or repairing the grub, which is apparently defective. I yield to your experience. I have been without my primary Desktop Computer for about a month and a half and am patient enough to wait longer for the proper repair.

Additionally, your comments are very thorough and totally understandable, however, I notice you spelling a few phonetically accurate, but slightly misspelled, words. Not knowing your nationality, I suspect that English is not your 1st language. I neither wish to presume nor offend, but if you wish, I will edit your spelling to show you the appropriate spelling for those words. You have been so kind to me, I thought perhaps you might like that information. In any event, how you write now is perfectly understandable and very much enjoyable to read. I would compare it to a foreigner speaking your language with an accent that is charming to hear. Most hopeful that I did not presume nor offend you with these latter comments, I close affectionately, Shabakthanai

This is a problem i ran into last week, when i first got this old computer running XP . For me, I had to copy two files from the XP OS disk. For Kubuntu, I did another install on new partition, sda5. I know the reinstall of Kubuntu was not ideal, but it fixed that error and was able to dual boot again.

                hard drive failure .....maby .

but so far we havent seen the 3'erd drive listed anywhere ........so if you don't mind investigating some more lets play some.

first do the ls commands I gave you in the previous post from the grub rescue> prompt and see what we get .
Then fire up the live cd to a desk top open a terminal and post the output of
                Code:
                sudo fdisk -l
this will show us the drives the system sees and what partitions thar are on them .

wile in the live cd open dolphin and see if the drives are listed in the places panel and if you can open them and see your old files?

next down load a gparted live cd or parted magick and keep it handy for now . http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ or http://partedmagic.com/doku.php parted magic has a nice testdisk utility.

you say you just installed the 3'erd drive but grub dosent see it .....you may whant to look in the BIOS setings and see if it is recognised from thare yet as well.

I downloaded Kubuntu 11.10 and copied to CD. This time the computer accepted the installation, so I am up and running. Thanks for helping me.

Hi, Ive got some things going on as above. I am relativeley proficient with this software. I will gladly orovide more data. Can anyone help me? My situtation is different primarily because Ubuntu was installed to a SD drive (remoeable) so that is problem 1. Why then were the HD partitions even modified? Please help!
