    Printer install help needed

Hi, I installed kubuntu (lastest stable release) and it doesn't see my printer! I know I need a driver from brother for my mfc-j415w but it has to be installed from a command line. I have absolutely no idea and have been reading and reading and getting more and more confused. I have a dual boot system with windows 7 which I would like to get of and use Kabuntu exclusively (well that is the plan anyway) I have been trying for 4 days now to solve my printer install problems. Can anyone give me step by step instructions, Please ??

I assume you have attempted to get the system to detect the printer via kmenu/system settings/printer configuration?

A check at openprinting.org makes no reference to this printer, so I suspect you will have to go with the brother ones.

    Check here

    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...nload_prn.html

Scroll down the page till you see your printer. You will see 2 .deb files - an lpr driver and a cupswrapper driver. I imagine you will need both. Installing them should be a case of clicking and entering your password.

    Good luck

        Hi...

First, since your printer appears to be a 3 in 1, the printer and scanner driver are separate. The scanner driver for your printer can be found in 64 bit and is located here. Click on the link that says "for brscan3 models" and then the deb file "brscan3 64bit." Don't click the RPM one! You should also grab the deb "scan-key-tool 64bit" as well. :-)

As far as the printer driver goes, there doesn't seem to be a 64 bit version available. However, here is an opportunity to get your feet wet (with Linux) a little. ;-)

There are instructions here that show how to force the i386 one to work. I can't guarantee it will work, though. If you feel this is too much too quick, another option would be to purchase a fully compatible printer to replace the one you have. I would recommend HP, although other brands will work just fine, too. You can view a full list of compatible printers here. Just pick the manufacturer. :-)

        Hope this helps...

            Hi...

I'm glad you got it working but I thought you needed the 64 bit version. Did I misunderstand?
