Amarok fails to open .wav files

When I select Amarok to play a .wav (aka .cda) file, the cursor just dances around the file name for a short while
and then goes away. In short, nothing happens. What can I do to investigate and correct this problem?
    Thanks very much.

Likely you don't have the restricted codecs installed, but to answer your question; one way to get more information on errors is to launch the offending program in a terminal so you can see the command line error output. In this case, kill Amarok open a terminal and type amarok

iirc those .cda files are NOT audio at all. more info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_Disc_Audio_track
