It actually works if I run it from my terminal....wich is weird....but not from vidalia....lol, its running on unix domain socket (controlsocket), and my Firefox config options are

    Manual proxy

    Socks Hosts: 127.0.0.1 port: 9051

        hello?

It doesn't look like anyone here is au fait with tor and vidalia. Maybe worth trying another forum. linuxquestions.org is quite active ...
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

My installation doesn't go to /var/lib/tor. I think tor can be installed for only one user or as root. The old installations all installed as root, and I think only the new installations enable you to install for a single user. This seems to be a permissions problem. The answer seems to be in the error code -- the permissions of the folder must be those of the user which will run tor.
