    The aged still use floppys

    I want to use my floppy drive in Kubuntu 11.10 and it shows up in the fstab #

    #/etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
    # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
    # that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
    #
    # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
    # / was on /dev/sda3 during installation
    UUID=7e19675c-e864-462e-bf4e-849a84e22089 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
    # swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation
    UUID=90056867-cce0-4541-b790-860a40e25b9f none swap sw 0 0
    /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

    I assumed that there was no dir to mount the floppy to so I tried to create one with the above name using the konsol but it told me that the file already exists so can I create another dir to mount it to?

    You should be able to mount it to any file you wish. Just make change in fstab to the new folder.

    though I don't see any reason that it won't mount to /media/floopy0 now.

    have you tried manually mounting it to see if it works?

      user: the user can mount this drive
      noauto: do not mount this drive at boot or with mount -a
      These are standard options for removable media, have you tried "mount /dev/fd0"?

        Last time I tried, the floppy module was not loaded by default, even when a floppy diskette drive was present. So, in a terminal try

        Code:
        sudo modprobe floppy
        it might be necessary to have the diskette in the drive when you do this.

            Code:
            sudo apt-get install viagra
            Possibly interesting fact: in South Africa, floppy refers to old 5¼ inch disks, with the flexible cases (and for all I know the very old 8 inch disks). The 3½ inch disks with the hard plastic cases are called stiffies.

              I needed to get some info off of some 3.5" floppies I had so I purchased a Lacie external floppy drive that connects to a USB port. Lucid (10.04) had no problem auto mounting it, or ejecting it, and I didn't have any problems reading and writing data to it.

                The email alert for this post just landed in my spam folder. Gee, I wonder why?

                    Hi all...

                    While I don't know about 11.10, I remember that in 10.04, the second version of udisks "broke" the ability to use floppies in that version. One had to go into a package manager and force the installation of the older version. Then the floppy drive would usually work. Please see here for more information. I'm not sure if this possible with 11.10, if there is even a problem to begin with. I'm not sure if udisks was ever fixed by the time 11.10 was released.
