Possibly all fora members should agree to use an honorific which I just invented: "misster" or in the nuptial form: "mrstr" or in extermis: "forevermisster" for the terminal female(or possibly male) spinster.

      Hi Steve...

I try to avoid words like "he," "she," "her," "him" for that very reason but in all honesty, I think we all assume that anyway since most of the folks on here, I believe, are male.

While you're undoubtedly correct that most KFNers are male, not ALL of us are. Honestly, I'm not offended when someone assumes I'm male and refers to me as he/him/his--it's much more likely to make me chuckle than get pissed off--but sometimes I just feel like making the correction, or asking my fellow KFNers to do it for me. :-D

When I volunteered for Castle Cops many years ago, probably 2005, there was a moderator/admin that had a rather neutral name and for quite a few years everybody assumed the person to be male. Just a very short while before CC closed she informed everyone that she was a she, and the couple who ran the thing verified it.

A LOT of people were flabbergasted and embarrassed, for a variety of reasons.

Folks, that's why I use "folks" when ever possible.

When I respond with something like "thanks guys" it's because I KNOW the people who replied, and who I'm thanking, are indeed male. If there's someone in the mix I don't know about, I'll leave out the 'guys' part. "Folks" works great for me, too, GG. Woodsmoke, that's an interesting story about the person long assumed to have been male...and wasn't.

                yes it is.
There was also an Islamic male that posted a rather castigating note a few days after 9-11 and it generated a thread with....oh as I remember.... 50 some odd pages of sometimes rather vitriolic posts, and also conciliatory and also argumentative....and it turned out it wasn't an Islamic person after alll.....and remember the ONE post generated 50 pages....it was one of the local denizens having a bit of fun at the expense of just about everybody on the forum.

                food for thought there....

Hm, interesting story, Smokie. While we aren't fans of censorship here, I suspect I (won't speak for the other admins) would be hovering close to the "Delete" button on a thread like what you describe.

Of course, the discourse at KFN routinely maintains a much higher quality, so I doubt we'd find ourselves facing a similar dilemma.

Which is one of the reasons why it's nice to help out here.

I know! I deliberately did something naughty the other day and--to my surprise--it hasn't been censored [yet]. (Of course now that I've opened my big mouth...)

And that's just one of many things I truly love about KFN and that sets it apart from so many other forums. Even a heated, volatile topic like the abortion discussion we're currently having remains civil. That's rare.

From my POV discussions must be based on mutual respect. One cannot expect to be heard if one is not willing to listen. (My wife taught me that, and it was a hard lesson to learn.) No one's view point is so sacrosanct that it is above thoughtful criticism.

Look for some stuff that emerges from the backend of an intact adult male of the species Bos taurus

                            Oh,,, THAT stuff!

There is so much of it on the ground here in Nebraska that I subconsciously step around it without even taking notice. I literally don't see it.

:-D (See, my reasoning was/is that we're all adults here [I think so, anyway], so no one's going to be traumatized by mild profanity.)
