You guys are awesome, I bow to your wisdom!

Here is my problem. I have a machine that used to run Windows 2000 Professional. I don't have the CD and when I boot it up, it asks me to update the drivers. I am trying to either install Kubuntu or Puppy Linux but this is what I find when I put boot from the CD.

When I try to install Puppy Linux:

    Segmentation fault
    Segmentation fault
    init [1] segfault @ f1a0 ip 0805fl8d sp bfd70d30 error 6 in busybox [9048000 + 44000]
Kernel panic not syncing: Attempting to kil init!

When I try to install Kubuntu:
The computer just hangs for a long time. I don't know what happens but I don't think Kubuntu installs either. Please help!

Well, since you're bowing and all that ....

Do you have your Kubuntu Live CD, or Ubuntu Live CD, or any live CD that has Gparted on it? Because I recommend as a first step (and assuming you mean to keep the Win 2000 Pro OS) that you shrink the Win 2000 partition and free up as much hard drive space as you want for Linux, and also for Linux swap.

Actually, I want to completely wipe out Windows 2000 Pro and just run either the newest Kubuntu on it or Puppy Linux. I have a copy of both OS (Kubuntu and Puppy) iso burned on a CD. It has been booting off fine in my other computers. But on that particular old Windows 2000 machine, it just won't do anything at all. And that message when I try to boot puppy can't be good!

I try to boot windows 2000 Pro and it won't boot either. The message is the blue screen of 0x00000024. It advises me to run CHKDSK to update drivers or something. I wish I had typed the entire line. I am so tired of this problem tonight. I think I'll rest and come back tomorrow.

Sorry I didn't give all the necessary info at the moment. I will add more tomorrow. Nite!

Step 1 -- burn a Parted Magic live CD or USB stick. You will use it to prepare the hard drive for the new OS.
