    [SOLVED]Avant Window Manager infected me with Unity...help!

    Hi guys,

    here's my problem, which I haven't been able to find in this forum:

    --> mainly Windows user

    --> installed Kubuntu Oneiric --> yay!

    --> installed AWN (am used to it from UDE pre-Unity) using the muon program manager (that might have been a bit simplistic...)

    --> restart

    --> KDE gone, Unity pasted all over the place

    --> naively done the following:
    • uninstalled all unity-related packages
    • restarted
    • ended up with blue unity-based desktop background. can access folders, that's about it. Alt+F2 doesn't twitch, nor does anything else I know.

    --> I have since learned that logging off and on again, choosing the kde session should circumvent the problem. How do I do this, starting in a crippled unity?

    Thanks in advance,

    Tom TomTom

    There should be a "Session Type" option when you log-in assuming there's more than one desktop manager available. If you're still using the default KDM startup theme, it's a little blue down arrow lower left corner of the log in window. Once you get logged in, KDE should be the default.

      Re: Avant Window Manager infected me with Unity...help!

      Thanks for the reply!

      Unfortunately, I am automatically logged in and dumped right into Unity during boot-up, without a log-in screen in sight. I forgot to mention that, didn't I...

      It's really just Kubuntu splash screen...loading...loading... Unity.

      Are there any global key combinations for logging off or variables that I can use to load the KDE session manually? Like an option to work around the auto-login?

      I found that ctrl-alt-f1 will open a terminal in my leftover Unity. How could I proceed from there?

      Thanks again,
      Tom TomTom

        Assuming you're still using KDM, open a terminal and type

        kdesudo kate /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

        Near the bottom of the file you should see AutoLoginEnable=true - change it to =false and re-login.

          @oshunluvr:
          Thanks,
          but this makes my machine say that "kdesudo cannot connect to the xserver".

          My terminal starts as follows:

          -----------------------------------------------

          Ubuntu 11.10 Tom tty1

          Tom login: tom
          Password: xxxx
          Last login: Sun Dec (and so on...)
          Welcome to Ubuntu 11.10 (GNU/Linux 3.0.0-13-generic x86_64)

          *Documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com

          tom@Tom:~$

          Where to now?

          Thanks,
          Tom

            Re: Avant Window Manager infected me with Unity...help!

            @oshunluvr was assumeing you could open a terminal from a desktop environment ..........you wont get any GUI apps to run from a tty (ctrl>alt>F1).

            you can try to reinstall the Kubuntu desktop package and see if that gets you back.

            Code:
            sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
            VINNY
            i7 4core HT 8MB L3 2.9GHz
            16GB RAM
            Nvidia GTX 860M 4GB RAM 1152 cuda cores

              Just as an "oddment" of information, when I did the manual install of Kubuntu desktop over Oneric Unity, upon shutdown I would see a "flash" of the Unity screen.

                @VINNY:

                That did it!

                Thank you, you just saved my day!

                Cheers,
