how can I delete files with unknown characters in the filename (? in diamond)

I have downloaded a backup of my website which allows users to upload images. A few of these images are showing a ? inside a diamond in the file name and I am unable to delete them from my system (Kubuntu 11.10). The user that uploaded these images is in Portugal so I guess the mystery characters are accents.

Any idea how I can delete these files?

Another way of doing it is using filezilla FTP and deleting / renaming the files from there

krename can usually do it.

or use the detox utility.

Another way to rename is to open the file with dolphin, there you should be able to right click, properties, and change the file name under the general tab.

I get this problem a lot with diacritic characters on celtic music cds.
