Re: random freezes, touchpad, and all that

Here are my default settings, any suggestions as to which might be causing problems?

    namely 1) right-click turned into left-click, and 2) ultra-sensitivity to palm contact

Here are the default values obtained from

could it be the settings of ClickFinger? where 2 and 3 are swapped? I didn't have these settings in my Kubuntu 10 xorg. I may also want to experiment with the settings of PalmDetect (which are disabled by default)

Re: random freezes, touchpad, and all that

      Ooooooooooooooh wait!

neither synaptiks nor the xorg.conf file can help me here, the issue is more serious:

      https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Touchpad_Synaptics

Some laptops have a special kind of touchpad which has the mouse buttons as part of the tracking plate, instead of being external buttons. HP series 4500 Probooks and X220 and X1 Thinkpads have this kind of a touchpad. Both of the mouse buttons are detected as one, resulting in the second mouse button being unusable and click + drag will not work.
      and a solution (hopefully)

To enable the second mouse button you need to install a patched version of the synaptics driver. Install xf86-input-synaptics-clickpad from the AUR.

Re: random freezes, touchpad, and all that

I haven't installed any patches yet, because there are several versions out there and I don't feel sufficiently confident about this. It would be my first ever patching you know.

I am now busy setting up my new machine, Lenovo U300s. The touchpad is a lot better behaved on the Lenovo than it is on the HP. For the time being I plan to use the Lenovo, I've got real work to do and can't afford to patch for days on end.

On the Lenovo I was able to set up synaptiks in a useful way: all the cursor movements are reasonable and the "disable while typing" feature makes the machine usable. I don't have right-click on the Lenovo either, which is a minor annoyance.

        To sum up,
        • Random freezes: were caused by the combination of a faulty adapter and a minor bug which results in a freeze of about 1 minute every time I connect or disconnect the adapter. After 1 minute or so, the plasma desktop crashes and everything is well. With a sound adapter, this is just a minor bug that I don't plan to fix.
        • Touchpad issues: no right-click button, just one giant button. Status: unsolved, annoying, seems to affect a large number of people. Particularly bad on the HP-DV6. Not so bad on the Lenovo U300s.

This thread can be closed. I'll open another one if I have further questions about the touchpad.

        Thanks for your help Steve.

Re: [SOLVED] random freezes, touchpad, and all that

I'm not sure how to close this thread, I tried to click on "lock/unlock" but it doesn't look like anything happened. Help appreciated.

Re: random freezes, touchpad, and all that

We typically only lock threads when the conversation veers way off topic or gets out of control. Solved problems don't fall into that category, because other forum members still might have something useful to add even though a solution is found.

              I see, thanks Steve.

In some forums people go mental if you don't close your thread before moving on
