If you right-click on the icon and select the Properties option (at the bottom of the menu) then click on the Permissions tab then for the group setting change it to "can read & write" then click on Ok. If should now allow you to change the icon to what you want.

Thanks NickStone. My files permissions and properties already were set as you describe. I agree "It should now allow..." But it does not. Simply - Does - Not - !!

I came to this forum asking for help -- and I got it. I'm grateful, ...really.
That the various proposals didn't work on *my* distro, on *my* hardware, doesn't diminish my gratitude. And I do now have what I wanted - just obtained by other means.

So, please, for me this issue is closed. I've spent far too much time on what - after all - is a minor matter. It's time for me to move on.

Just in case anyone else runs into this...

I had the same problem. Did some google searching and found that you can change the icon by loading the launcher into a text editor. Turns out there were two entries for the icon.

[Desktop Entry]
Icon[en_US]=<something, I forgot>
Icon=/home/joe/Pictures/icons/Downloads.png

I changed the [en_US] entry to what I wanted and deleted the other and that got it working.

[Desktop Entry]
Icon[en_US]=/home/joe/Pictures/icons/Downloads.png

I would have just deleted the [en_US] line as it should then default to the general line after.

I found that for me, my desktop files were owned by root, so I changed the permissions to me, still I could not change the icons. I then discovered that because those files are links, that they have no permissions (see image below)
The way to change the icons, is to delete the desktop files for those you wish to change the icons. Right click on the start button and select edit applications. Here you can change the icons, save and then link to the desktop. Your newly chosen icons will be displayed.
