What is automatix and why use it?

I want to install multimedia codes so I can watch dvds, play mp3s, rip to mp3, etc. I also need to install flash. On ubuntu I installed all the multimedia stuff I needed by browsing the forums and installing the stuff with synaptic. I didn't know flash was there so I installed it by hand. After all this work, I see posts about automatix. I have browsed this forum a bit, but most posts go something like, "I used automatix to install package x ... " So I'm curious, what is it and how does it work? In my situation would it be worth installing and learning to install all the codecs I'm going to need? Thank you.

Automatix is a script which downloads and installs the important bit and pieces automatically. The other script is called Easyubuntu

Both scripts (easyubuntu and Automatix) are basically automating the process of editing your apt sources.list and installing the applications and libraries, etc that they list. Most if not all these things are relatively easy to do in and of themselves from Adept or Synaptic, it is more a matter of what you feel comfortable with really.
