    CPU info

    hi..
My laptop is supposed to have intel core i3-370M processor 2.4GHz
    but when I surf through /proc/cpuinfo, i get: cpu MHz : 933.000
    whats happening here exactly...?

    Re: cpu info

Normal. The CPU is rated for max sustained speed of 2.4GHz, but it doesn't operate at that speed unless there is a need to do so. Most of the time my Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 380 @ 2.53GHz runs at 933MHz.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007

      Re: cpu info

ok now im just curious... is this case different for servers?
because I work with a tower server and the result for this command exactly shows the max GHz value, whether the server is processing much or very less. maybe I should mention the tower server has CentOS installed, although I think this case differs in hardware point of view so it shouldnt be about RedHat's manner...

one more thing, I have a post going on about my laptop's temperature...

does this have anything to do with that??

        Re: CPU info

First off - cpuinfo under Ubuntu will not show any overclocked speeds - a known bug.

Secondly, if you want to disable throttling it's not too difficult. I run my desktop overclocked and full speed but let my server and laptops throttle down. Saves battery life.

I would guess CentOS is not enabling throttling by default like Ubuntu does. Could be an older CPU that doesn't support it too.

Temperature would be effected by CPU frequency but I don't think a hot CPU would engage throttling per se.
