Stalled Installation

I'm new to "Linux /Kubuntu" and really like it, but there is still a couple of programs that I use that are windows only. I started to install Wine which started OK but then hung while trying to install windows fonts. After two hours of waiting, I had to closed down my system.
The next time I starting my system it informed me that there was updates, so I selected to start the update process, but it now displays a messages saying that the "Down load is locked by another manager and needs to be closed down to proceed".
So my question is how do I find out "what programs" are running/hanging in the back ground.
Can anyone make any suggestions.

I am not really the person to help you, however if you are waiting for immediate help, this may help you. If you tried to install a program using a package manager, for example: Kpackage Kit, Synaptic Package Manager, or Muon Package manager, or if you are trying to use a Konsole, the command line tool, you can only use one of them at a time. If there are more than one open, close the one/s that are not currently being used. That may correct your problem. You may then continue using the application that is giving you the error message.

This may or not be the solution to your problem, however it should not harm anything by trying.

Not being one of the skilled ones who will eventually help you solve your problem, I am sitting and waiting for help on my own problem and cannot continue til I hear from a specialist. Good Luck.

I installed via the Muon Package manager, and now when I try to install anything I get the message.

Close muon, synaptic, and other open packages. Alt-F2 "konsole" with no quote marks. When the terminal is open, enter

sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo apt-get -f install

That should enable the wine installation to complete. If either of these commands gives an error output, post the error message here.

That worked a treat, it cleared the blockage and finished the install. But I'm now finding that other installs are hanging at about 34% mark. and the only way to clear it is to restart the system. this all seamed to have started since the Wine install. any suggestions.

This may or may not be useful for you, however, I remember my transition from Microsoft to Kubuntu. I was a bit resistant to applications that were made by kubuntu developers, wanting to keep my Windows favorites.

As a Kubuntu user for over 10 years, I don't find any applications made by Kubuntu developers that I feel are inferior to any of the Windows compatible applications. This includes Gimp instead of the very expensive Adobe Photoshop application. Everything from email applications like Kmail, the browser, Konqueror are more configurable and work better, on the whole than any of my former favorites.

I always thought that because the Windows applications cost a lot of money, they were obviously better. After all these years, I now believe the opposite is true. The only application I miss is voice activated software made by Dragon Systems. For some reason, Kubuntu and other Linux Operating Systems have not inspired developers to tackle this kind of technology.

I highly recommend searching in the Kubuntu package manager, comparable applications to the ones you are currently attempting to install using the Wine program. Although there may be some minor changes in how you use and apply the features, I believe you may find you prefer the Kubuntu compatible applications even more than those you are having difficulty installing.

If you have taken advantage of the multiplicity of configuration capabilities of Linux applications, you must have experienced the general feeling of superiority of Linux over what you have been used to. You can expect the same from the workhorse applications that have been created to make transition to Linux relatively easy.

Since I changed to Kubuntu, the best decision I made was when I decided to give the Linux applications a full chance as replacement for the Windows applications. After learning the slight differences in operation and allowing the new applications to become familiar, I also found them far superior in most cases to the programs they replaced. That's my humble opinion.

Hi Guys
Thanks to Teunis for the help it seems to fix the problems and no errors where reported. I do a lot of 3D stuff and have moved from Windows and 3Dmax to Linux and Blender, of which I still have a few issues, but nothing that cant be fixed.The only reason I require Wine is to run a package called "Sculptris" which at this time is free but only available in Mac or Windows. But everything else I'm able to do.
Can I just thank everyone on the Forum for all the time and help given.

Hi All again.
Spoke to soon I think, went to run the system updates and yes the install has stalled. with the "Software Updates" panel open it tells me installing updates. the progress bar is at 56% with the text "Running post-installation trigger libc-bin" and doing nothing I leave it for a couple of hours yet still nothing. Any ideas...................

Hi all
I'm starting to get angry with my system. Installing or updating is now a real pain with everything returning an error at the glibc file, it just hangs. I can carry on with other tasks, but won't allow me to shut down in the normal way. It is now getting to the point that if I can't resolve it, I'm going to have to go back to Windows which I really don't want to do.
can I reinstall the file "glibc"or fix it.

can anyone help me...............

The problem appears to be relating to gnome themes and colours.

On my kubuntu installation (I also have wine installed) there is no package installed that includes "gnome-colors" in its name. When you say you have "kubuntu" installed do you have kubuntu or ubuntu (which is gnome based) with the kubuntu desktop installed? If the latter you will also have gnome installed and it is that which appears to be causing the problem.

Open muon package manager and in the search bar type

gnome-colours

There will be a list thrown up, some will be installed, some may not. Mark those installed for removal BUT DO NOT REMOVE THEM YET. Instead, select preview changes and see what else the system will remove. Does anything other than the gnome icons and themes show up for removal (I would not want you to remove anything that can break your system)? If it is just those packages then you ought to be able to safely remove them.
