In fiddling with Compiz I found that I lost my workspaces, or virtual desktops.
It took a lot of noodling on the net, but it turns out that i did not "lose" the workspaces, it is just that the settings are "odd" when one has compiz enabled.
One way way to get them back is to go to compiz settings manager and to "general options" then to "desktop size" and change the HORIZONTAL to the number you want(the examples are all "4") and leave the horizontal and "number of desktops " to "1".
And voila... the desktops are there. Why one sets number of desktops to "1" I have no idea, but it may all be related to the construction of the "cube" don't know...
