Which Kernel Does Kubuntu 10.04.3 Load/Upgrade With?

I do NOT currently have that version installed or I'd look on the machine.

Which kernel does a Kubnutu 10.04.3 CD install and which ones has it been issuing as an upgrade?

I need to know for this thread: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=71934

    Many thanks.

Can't someone who's running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS, the latest Long Term Support release, JUST TAKE A FEW SECONDS to open a Konsole/terminal window and issue:
    Code:
    uname -v
which will show the kernel version?

    I'm not asking for much.

According to the package list, it looks like 2.6.32 is what gets installed. You can upgrade to 2.6.35 or 2.6.38 without adding any other PPAs or manually downloading DEBs.

Note: you can always visit http://packages.ubuntu.com to find out what various Ubuntus will install.

Re: Which Kernel Does Kubuntu 10.04.3 Load/Upgrade With?

              It's a Sony Vaio PCG-R505TSK laptop.
              The spec's are here: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/spe...05TSK_mksp.pdf

It supposedly had Red Hat Linux but was wiped.

I installed Kubuntu 10.04.3 but it was a total slug/snail. Click something and a couple minutes later it would respond. Kubuntu also cropped the screen area for some reason.

I feel like I sold my soul because I installed XP on it and even thought it fixed the screen problem, it's not much faster.

I thought to try Puppy Linux but there was no success there as you might have read in the other thread.

              Thanks

Maybe you should install MS-DOS. I can get you the bits, if you want. I don't know of much else that would run on a 10 year old laptop with a Pentium III, 128MB RAM, and a 20GB hard drive

Re: Which Kernel Does Kubuntu 10.04.3 Load/Upgrade With?

It actually has 384 MB of Ram, which the spec's say is to where it can be upgraded. Also it has a 40Gig hard drive. I've used 20 gig HDDs but just don't rip movies.

256Meg o' RAM, in theory, should run XP and Puppy Linux but it seems there's a low level BIOS/Firmware issue.

At the top of the post I write that I'm on a budget. It can be tough to find hardware that takes Linux with no issue. Old laptops are not cheap locally but I may just get a new tablet PC with a big screen & docking station...

If you go that route, carefully evaluate compatibility, and be sure to stay away from machines that use UEFI rather than good old BIOS.

that should run ok with Xubuntu
did you give yourself a swap partition when you installed ?

You'd pretty much have to override the addition of a swap partition. I've installed from an alt CD and the desktop CD and as I recall, the both define a swap partition by default.

This thing is slow as molasses in January with Kubuntu and even Windings XP.

no Sr. they don't define one be default if thar is no swap partition already on the drive ...........in other words if you didn't create a swap partition on the drive before the installation ore create one with the installer .......then you have none .

type "free" in a terminal and post the output.

No you are not asking a lot, but do realize that maybe your post was in the middle of the day so many of us are at work or somewhere away from our beloved Kubuntu boxen :/

In my opinion, even Xubuntu these days may be a bit heavy for that machine, as it does run a lot of services underneath XFCE that could slow it down there.

There is Lubuntu, which is very lightweight Ubuntu variant, as well as Puppy Linux, which will run on just about anything, including my still-running Pentium-mmx 233 mhz 192mb ram Thinkpad. It actually has a lot of cool helper wizards to get things set up and running, though it is not quite as easy as the "big" linuxes.

Or you might try Bodhi Linux. At the urging (and urging, heh) of oshunluvr, I've put this on my HP Mini. Other than struggling with the fscking Broadcom wireless (what else is new?), I'm enjoying it. It's compact, uses very little power, and just might run well on your hardware. It's based on Lucid LTS.

So, Mr. elludium_q-36 , I'd suggest you download a copy and see if you can get it running on that explosive space modulator of yours
