[SOLVED] It Doesn't Get Any Noobier Than This

Q: How does one upgrade to a later version of Kubuntu from within Kubuntu itself?

    That's all.

    Thanks for your help,
    Tex

ps: Yes, I searched. Saw lots of ellipses and some text.

yup - essential, for a upgrade depending on how new you are to ubuntu/linux .. for a new/later release command is:

      Code:
      sudo do-release-upgrade -d
ASUS M4A87TD | AMD Ph II x6 | 12 GB ram | MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti (448 Cuda cores)
      Kubuntu 12.04 KDE 4.9.x (x86_64) - Debian "Squeeze" KDE 4.(5x) (x86_64)
      Acer TimelineX 4820 TG | intel i3 | 4 GB ram| ATI Radeon HD 5600
      Kubuntu 12.10 KDE 4.10 (x86_64) - OpenSUSE 12.3 KDE 4.10 (x86_64)
      - Officially free from windoze since 11 dec 2009

Gotta warn ya, sometimes upgrades can go haywire. I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and a lot of thing didn't work anymore. Might I suggest a clean install on a different partition? Then you can move files, backup, and whatever else while testing out the new OS?

I bloody well know haywire and no mistake. Read on.

I'm using V10.04 at the moment. The problem is a bit more complicated than it first appears (at least it seems that way to me), to wit: My machine is set up for dual-boot service. When I built it, I first installed V10.04 from a live CD and later, installed Win7 Ultimate 64. Win7U64 commandeered the whole bloody system and mucked with everything - including the Kubuntu partition! Worse, I can't even run a live CD anymore regardless of the BIOS settings or anything.

My plan before coming here today was to download the live 11.04 iso, burn it to disk, then boot off it. From there exorcise the M$ demon and dedicate the entire machine to V11.04. Oh, btw, I can >>burn<< discs on this system just fine, but Bog help me if I actually try to >>boot<< off one.

If I could boot off a live CD, this whole issue would probably be academic. I've even considered replacing the HD wholesale just to rid myself of that accursed M$ scourge once and for all.

Any suggestions concerning the live CD problem?

Can you run Wubi? You might get somewhere from there?

Thanks Jonas. I'm giving it a shot as we speak. I have to chuckle at the upgrader (for lack of a better term): it estimates 57 minutes to download 680 MB. That'll be the day!

I'll let you know how it works out.

              Peace,
