Re: How do I link Primary to logical Partitions

Not sure what you mean by name - if you mean username, the alphabetical name you use makes no difference. The important factor is UID (user ID) and it's numerical. If you change that, you cannot share a home (at least not without jumping through hoops).

Again, all your documents (includes photos, music, etc) won't care which OS you're using or what program they're accessed by. As long as you have the same GID/UID on both installs, you'll have equal access.

As long as you keep digiKam, etc. at the same versions (update both installs equally) I can't foresee any problems.

Re: How do I link Primary to logical Partitions

OK, I think we have it then. I am the only person on this system and the next system I build, hopefully next summer, is going to be wired Network but used as a lower wattage system for 24/7 distributive computing.

I think things are good now, but I will wait a day or two in case there are any re-occurrences of the boot with Ubuntu.

I will install some music to test things out.

Well, if it were me, at this point I'd leave well-enough alone.

It will be a good experiment to see if Kubuntu and Ubuntu can co-exist without issues.

I suspect within a few months, you'll find yourself booting more and more to one or the other and soon you'll be using only one distro anyway.

Re: How do I link Primary to logical Partitions

Oh Boy; just tried booting back to Ubuntu and it hung up again. I think a re-installation and renaming of sda5 is in order. Should sda5 be /home/data? or something else? I am not sure what is causing the hang-up but if I give another computername to Ubuntu do you think that would help? And if so what should sda5 be instead of /home/computer or user name so I can just link the 3 folders instead of the entire home directories.

Or is it better to use G-Parted and just change the sda5 mount and name/location?

Re: How do I link Primary to logical Partitions

Sorry, but I really don't have a clue what you mean by "renaming sda5" or "giving Ubuntu a different computername".

Gparted is a GUI partitioning/formatting tool. It doesn't control where partitions are mounted. Mounting occurs from within your OS, not by an external tool.

If you want to return Ubuntu to using it's own /home, simply follow the directions above and re-edit /etc/fstab within the Ubuntu install and remove the /home mount line.

The next time you re-boot Ubuntu, the log-in manager will re-create a fresh home directory in /home and you'll be back at square one. No need to re-install unless something is causing the problem.

Re: How do I link Primary to logical Partitions

I shut down the system for a while then tried booting into Ubuntu. The system hung with the default Ubuntu 'background' [I miss spoke earlier I never set a wall-paper in U].

Both OS's on sda2 and sda3 respectively have the same 'user-name & password'; I do not know if that is the problem or not.

In regards to a re-installation of Ubuntu it would be to change that user-name and password and to allow the boot-loader to reset.

If I do that it will also give me the opportunity to change sda5 from /home/user-name to something that would allow for me to set up 'links' [symlink?] from both U and K to /home/Doc; /home/pictures and /home/music but I am not sure what to change it to that would allow that type of linkage.

I am in Kubuntu now so doing a re-installation would most likely only take 45minutes and basic set-up of Firefox another 15-20 minutes.

I hope I am making better sense but correct me if I am not.

this should not mater ..................sharing the same /home may mater........did you ever get Ubuntu's /home on sda5? if not GOOD if so ?

the boot loader is grub........changing the user name and password wont mater to grub......it dosent even know the user names or passwords.

                  is Kubuntu running well ?
if so dont change anything yet.

wile in kubuntu open dolphin and click the ubuntu drive ....you should see it in the left hand panel it will be the 56Gig drive that is not mounted yet..........go to /etc/fstab and post the file contents so we can see whether you have sda5 mounted as /home......shared with Kubuntu .

do that and nothing else yet!

Re: How do I link Primary to logical Partitions

I didn't discuss linking yet because you're jumping all over the place and any new tasks are likely just to cause you more trouble.

Don't worry about how it's going to be done yet - that's for the near future.

For now, you need to decide whether or not you want to share home directories.

Again, if you're getting a log in screen - stop worrying about grub.

Seriously, slow down and get one thing working at a time. First step is to get both installs booting again and then answer the question above.

I think thats a bad Idea.......and believe it may be why your having trouble logging in to Ubuntu.

I will as a test try that later tonight or tomorrow on one of my test boxes .....what ver. of both are you using?

it was slightly problematic before KDE wint to the 4+ ver. and Ubuntu wint to ebicuwhat?? anyway I'm sure theirs more of a conflict with desktop configs now!!

so the sharing of the entire /home directory is most likely causing the conflict? I read your pm and it sounds like that method of linking the specific folders is the best idea. Can I do that with three folders linked into just sda5? If how then where do I go from here?

O ya ....I would for now remove the line
                              UUID=2a065d80-b9f8-4e5b-9101-ee353f766466 /home ext4 defaults 0 2
from Ubuntu's fstab as a test to see if that cures the Ubuntu login probs......IF that UUID is sda5
you can check with the comand
                              Code:
                              sudo blkid
