    Stupid Newbie Question

Firefox is my default browser, so why is Kubuntu asking me which application to use for an http: link? Furthermore, I cannot find Firefox in the dialog that pops up. It does not do anything sane, like give you a list of applications, instead it dumps you into the Dolphin file manager. Should it not already know how to open a link in the default browser, when I click on an email link?

OK, I'm not sure what application you are using when you want to open these links. Is it thunderbird? kmail? Please let us know and we can help you. Thanks

      Re: Stupid Newbie Question

I'm using Thunderbird. When I click a link in an email, it asks me to specify a program to open the link.

I assume you have firefox set up as default browser via system settings/default applications?

Can you also tell me please whether you have the firefox available in the standard repositories or from somewhere else (a ppa or the mozilla website)?

Default Applications: Web Browser --> Firefox

I installed Firefox from the Kubuntu repository.

You may still have to tell tbird what program to use - it doesn't always follow the system defaults

              Hi...

Also, it's not a stupid question! I ran into the same problem a while back using Opera and had to ask the same question.

You should also check to make sure Firefox uses Thunderbird when you click on a mailto link. Edit>Preferences>Applications.

I believe this is the answer. Thunderbird is stupid, so you have to tell it what to do! It has nothing to do with Kubuntu.

Will someone please look at this link and tell me where the pictured "New String Value" field is located. It does not appear anywhere in my version of Thunderbird, which is 3.1.12. It's possible I'm looking in the wrong place.

with the config editor open (edit/preferences/advanced/config editor) right click inside the main config editor pane and select "new".

This does seem to be a rather random issue. Oddly, it doesn't happen when you use Chrome or Chromium (as I now do) as the default browser. In my experience from a new install using t'bird as default mailer and firefox as default browser it seemed to happen mainly when I strayed from the default repositories, in my desire to have the latest firefox.

I'm sorry for being ignorant, but where's the config editor?

In Thunderbird's menu, choose Edit then Preferences. Now click Advanced. On the General tab, click the Config Editor button.

                            Re: Stupid Newbie Question [SOLVED]

Bravo, it finally works, thanks! What's baffling is that T-Bird was not already set up to direct http, https, and ftp to Firefox by default. That level of neglect is mind-numbing. At least I figured it out with the help of this forum.

Thunderbird opens Firefox for me just fine without having to do the specialized setup. Out of curiosity, please go to System Settings | File Associations | text | html. What's in your Application Preference Order list?
