I'm trying to install a game called Heroes of Newerth. I downloaded the .sh file from their website (www.heroesofnewerth.com). I've rightklicked the file and gone into properties and filled the box "is executable". But when i want to start the setup the konsole screen just flashes quickly and then nothing happendes. I've tried restarting my computer to. Please help me!

Edit: I've discovered that i can't install anything at all, so i changed the name of the subject.
Same thing happens, a window pops up real fast and then closes instantly.

Yes but it doesnt work, i've just noticed that i don't only have problems installing the game but i have problems installing anything at all, except for the Kpackagekit programs i'm not able to install anything. Everytime i try i get the same as before, a windows pops up and closes just as quickly again.

Can you clarify? What do you mean by "not able to install anything except the KPackageKit programs"? What are the KPackageKit programs?

Kpackagekit is the software manager and that's the only place that I can install stuff on, like MSN and VLC and so on. But if I download something from the internet and try to install it, it doesnt work at all. I've tried dubbel-klicking the .sh file (I've also tried installing different programs like; Nvidia driver for my GPU, Playstation mediaserver for Linux, games and so on) but nothing happens.

Can you try to run the installer from the command line?

Go to the folder you've extracted, like ~/heroes_whatever

            then
            Code:
            sudo sh thefile.sh

                    Ok, I was shootign blindly.
From the website, the terminal method, maybe we'll get some more meaningful input, cuz segfault by itself is not very informative. Go to the folder, and to

                    Code:
                     chmod +x HoNClient-*.sh

Re: Can't install anything, please help!

                      Hy.
I'm a newbie who comes from Windows.

I've installed Kubuntu under Windows with Wubi, but I have the following problems:
When I try to install a .deb package, it open with Ubuntu Software Center, but when I try to install, nothing happens. I've tried with teamviewer, opera, virtualbox and also with applications from software center.
When I try to update using the Update Manager, the following error occurs: "This operation cannot continue since proper authorization was not provided". The password prompt does not appear.
Same error occurs when using Muon Software Center.

I've succeed to install applications, but I must logout and login under Ubuntu desktop. In Ubuntu desktop the password prompt appears and I can install things.

I think there is a bug in Kubuntu. I've tried in Xubuntu also, and it works fine.

                      Thanks.

Re: Can't install anything, please help!

Did you install kubuntu or ubuntu and then install kde?

To answer your specific point (installation) you don't want .deb files opening in the ubuntu software centre in kubuntu. Even in ubuntu 11.10 on my wife's netbook it's the worst possible way. You have a couple of options that you can use:

qapt-deb-installer : May already be installed (right click and select "open with") or
                        gdebi-kde:

Once you have one of the above packages installed, it should be simply a question of clicking on the file, enter password and done.

If you get the password problem then we have something more here I think - as it works in gnome it suggests an improper kde installation. If so open a terminal and type

                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
                        What happens?

Re: Can't install anything, please help!

First I tryed Ubuntu then I've installed kde, then I've installed directly Kubuntu.

.deb files works just fine in Ubuntu software center and also in Xubuntu. The problem on Kubuntu is that the password prompt does not appear even for the softwares that are already in the software center. The password prompt doesn't appear neither in Muon Software Center, neither when I try to make updates.

I've installed Kubuntu under Windows using wubi. I'll try a full instalation from the cd.

Same on a kubuntu installed from iso in virtualbox. Ubuntu software center, Muon software center and updates doesn't work, because the password prompt does not appear.

If I type sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop in terminal, the password is prompted, and it works. The following message appears
                            Reading package lists... Done
                            Building dependency tree
                            Reading state information... Done
kubuntu-desktop is already the newest version.

I think that is the problem - you have a stuck upgrade (or a package that at the time was preventing the upgrade of 448 packages)

In the first instance try to run

                              Code:
                              sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
                              If that doesn't work

                              Code:
                              sudo dpkg --configure -a
