    please help

    I have a big problem!
Hoping to try out a "Live CD" version of Kubuntu, I downloaded the latest version, burnt it and clicked run . . . . .

I have done this with many other 'live cd' versions of Ubuntu and others and all they do is run off the cd and ---- don't write anything to the hard drive ------.

When all I got was a blank screen, I figured there was an incompatability with my FirePro graphics card (have had this before), so I shut down and went to bed.

When I turned on my system (***the one I work on every day and earn my living with***) IT TURNS OUT THIS "LIVE CD" WRITES TO THE HARD DRIVE.

So, now I have a Grub taken over my boot, with no seeming way of getting rid/out of it.

Can someone please advise how I can get my Windows 7 back up at boot and clean off whatever was installed?
And why would anything be installed anyway?

    Thanks

Also, as I cut into what ever was being installed, all I get is a text flash that Grub is starting and then a blank screen.

      Re: please help

      Hi

I have used this prior to coming over to linux and it works

      taken from EUKHOSTBLOG Quote"

You’ll need to get your Windows 7 or Windows Vista retail disc

Put the disc in, then as it comes up to the installation section (for retail discs), click “Repair my computer” then go and select your Windows installation, and from there select Command Prompt.

      Then you need to type:

Note: execute one command at a time

      bootrec.exe /FixBoot
      bootrec.exe /FixMbr

      " end quote

ps a quick google search will find you more answers but this one worked for me

      Good luck

To understand true frustration, one must only go so far as to install Linux!!! and then came Kubuntu and the World is at peace again

        Thanks zebedeeboss,

        That was the way

Was about to reach for that disk, but didn't know the details about boot recovery.
The long form often messes with installed software (which I don't want to do).

        thanks again

        best

          Re: please help

I really don't see how Grub can be written to the MBR without installing Kubuntu. Are you sure your CD is not still in the drive?

            Re: please help

No offense Fred (how did a dog get an account on here?), I don't believe your Kubuntu disk wrote anything to your hard drive just by booting it. IMO, you had to have clicked something or done something to cause this problem. The Grub installer on the livecd is the last thing done during the install process so there's no way you accidentally clicked install and got all the way to that part of the installation without noticing.

            It's a puzzler...

I've booted literally dozens of times to Kubuntu cd's, live USB's and six or seven other distros too. Not once did any of them do anything to any hard drive unless I told it too.
