Trouble logging in kubuntu 11.04

I am stuck with a particular problem while logging onto kubuntu 11.04. Whenever I start my computer instead of plasma desktop loading the terminal loads. I get the startup screen but as soon as the splash screen is about to load it boots into the terminal.

Did you update something just before the problem hit? Updates of kde or the kernel can create an issue like this.

If kde then when you are in the terminal (ensure you are connected to the net) try typing

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

and

sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop

If this does not work the most obvious culprit will be your graphics card. What type is it and have you just updated the kernel?
