Postgresql server not starting

Hello All,

I have PostgreSQL installed on my system, but I can not start it and I don't see any error messages.
What am I doing wrong?

What do the logs say?

I looked in the system logs and I did not see anything.
I did a "whereis postgresql" and found my postgresql directories, but I do not see any log files in them.

Did I over look them?

Look in /var/log - they should be in there.

I looked in the log, but that stuff was a couple days old so I thought I would give it another shot to see if I could get the latest error, so to speak.
So I just tried restarting the postgresql server in a terminal and this is the first time I have gotten an error. Here it is:

chmod: changing permissions of `/var/run/postgresql': Operation not permitted

How should I address this?

OK. I did finally get the server to start, but I had to do it using sudo. I thought I read somewhere that you should not start it using sudo or starting it as root.
