Re: RESOLVED Unable to write to /run/udev/ THANKS ALL

I believe the explanation lies with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splashtop

That mini-OS, in firmware, is part of his Asus motherboard. It clearly includes non-volatile memory, and with Skype and an IRC client as part of the menu that comes up at boot time (alongside the option to enter BIOS), I have to believe there is a capability to "burn in" the user's initial desktop screen. That's what I think happened. Don't ask me exactly how .... it was quite a strange thing to see pop up, after formatting the hdd partition and installing a clean new 11.04 OS. Or else there is non-volatile video memory, with the onboard Nvidia GPU, that is saving the initial KDE desktop. I dunno .... it's being saved in firmware somewhere on the motherboard.

      Thanks, Dibl!

That looks like part of a Windows lock-in plan, and one mobo I will avoid in the future.

FYI, I love my Asus P6X58D-E motherboard, and it does NOT have the Splashtop firmware. It does have a fairly extensive BIOS and support utility, including a capability to choose the boot device from the firmware, even before there is an attempt to find a bootloader. It also has enough onboard memory to save several overclocking configurations, as named config files, if you want to. But no Splashtop, and I think I'm glad.
