    General video playing problems

    I having an issue with kmplayer and playing video with it.

    My HD videos play poorly. Even videos that are just 720p and well with in the range of my video card to support. I only have minor issues with playing video that is 1080p in size. The second issue is related to the first one. When I play video in Kmplayer and I have selected the output as "auto", the video is played in the frame outside of kmplayer. It is not suppose to behave like this.

    If I select the option "X11Shm" then the video plays inside the window. But performance remains poor regardless for the high-def videos.

    Here is the video card in my computer.

    Re: General video playing problems

    Starting with the video card: Do you have the nvidia drivers installed via jockey?

    If you do you should also have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

    You'll want these options:
    Code:
    Section "Device"
      ~~~~
      Option "Coolbits" "1A"
      Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
    #        + Enables triple buffering. "Decreases the time an application stalls while waiting for vblank events, but increases latency slightly" (NVIDIA Readme)
      Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "True"
    #        + Enables the X server's composite wrapper instead of the builtin one.
      Option "BackingStore" "True"
    #        + Cache overlayed areas in case they get redisplayed later
      Option "OnDemandVBlankInterrupts" "True"
    #        + only fire VBlank interrupts in modes where they are needed
    and this section:
    Code:
    Section "Extensions"
      Option "Composite" "Enable"
      Option "RENDER" "Enable"
    EndSection
    If you want to validate these options, before you add them, install gtkperf and run it before and after the changes. Don't forget you'll have to restart X before edits to xorg.conf take effect.
    You might try a different video player too. Dragon is the default but it's too buggy for my taste. I use VLC and don't forget to install libavcodec-extra-52.
      Re: General video playing problems
      I have nvidia driver installed via software manager. I do not know what version of nvidia drivers I am using. I did not have any xorg.conf file. So I am creating it in part using what you [oshunluvr] did post here.
        if you didn't have an xorg.conf file then you were not using the "nvidia" driver. you must have been using the open source driver. the propertary one can only load if you have an xorg.conf. it must have some how skiped the part where it creats the initial xorg file. i think its the 'nvidia-xsetup' command but not sure you can find it around here some where easily enuff .
          More likely the driver never got installed or enabled. Jonfr: open a terminal, type these in:
          sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get install nvidia-common nvidia-settings dkms linux-headers-`uname -r`
          This should install and activate the nvidia driver. You will need to reboot after this. Then add the options to the xorg.conf file.
            Somehow, while trying to fix this issue. I did break the startup part of the Kubuntu. It starts, but never goes into graphic mode and I cannot access the shell (F1 buttons do not work). It just hangs with blinking terminal line in one corner.
            What is my best option to fix this ?
                  I did fix the problem. It was the xorg.conf file that I had created. Deleting it did solve the problem.
                  Now to install the real nvidia drivers.
                      Restart and tell us if there is any mention of mesa in
                      Code:
                      glxinfo
                      and can you run
                      Code:
                      glxgears
                      what FPS do you get?
                      BTW-- The GUI to install proprietary drivers is
                      Code:
                      jockey-kde
                        Re: General video playing problems
                        I did install mesa, it was not installed. I get this amount of FPS when testing the test run graphics.
                        Code:
                        glxgears
                        1602 frames in 5.0 seconds = 320.372 FPS
                        XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"
                           after 6336 requests (39 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
                        The answer to that would be no.
                        Code:
                        jonfr@jupiter:~$ glxinfo | grep mesa
                        jonfr@jupiter:~$
                        I am now setting up the nvidia driver with jockey-kde.
                          Good news. This problem is solved. Everything appears to be playing like it should be playing.
                          Added: For some reason the system wants to downgrade to Nvidia drivers 270.41.06. I think that I am running Nvidia 275 drivers.
