Software Black screen and freeze

Hello, and thank you for your help.

Whenever I try running any games or stellarium the screen turns black and I can't do anything but a hard reset. I've got a great graphics card and a pretty good computer, I just don't understand. My old crappy laptop did these programs just fine. Any help is greatly appreciated thank you very much

1) What exact card do you have?
2) driver and version
3) glxinfo/fglrxinfo output
4) can you run glxgears

When the screen goes black, you usually don't have to reboot. SSH-in to your computer or switch TTY's (CTRL+F1), login, and 'sudo killall appname'

Above shows what the screen said after I typed what you said in the terminal

ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3600 Series
is the exact card I have and
ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX Graphics driver

open terminal (konsole)

glxgears

if it tells you to install something, do it

glxinfo

fglrxinfo

if glxgears doesn't work you might want to go back to the FOSS driver

BTW-- do you dual-boot, or have another computer, or any way to access the forums if your xserver goes down?
