    Graphics art program

I am into doing computer aided art, and i reboot to windows to use adobe photoshop.
is there a similar program i could use in linux? I hate rebooting whenever i feel like i want to doodle.
the kind of art i do is photo realistic, so i need an art program that lets me mess with the
levels of opacity and do very wide range of colors. the ability to work in layers would be a real
bonus. if anyone knows let me know.

p.s. if you wanna look at any of my art check me out on deviantart.com my name is erigais
so you can just type it in search.

Gimp is very powerful. It can be installed via KPackagekit (the default package manager) or from the command line (CLI).

      Hi erigais

And it also has a "photoshop look-alike" plugin that nicely mimics "last years" photoshop to make the transiton easier.

just to add some other programs that you may find useful

Inkscape - vector based image editor http://inkscape.org/

mypaint - if you like to doodle it's quite fun with a drawing board - http://mypaint.intilinux.com/

both should be in the repository.

          Hi there,

Just to echo the other postings on your query, there are 3 major ones you could use:

          1. GIMP
          2. Inkscape
          3. Blender

You can find them all in the KPackage Kit.

          Jude

              Re: Graphics art program

The only thing I know of that gimp won't do for you is adjustment layers. That may or may not be important to you depending on how you use Photoshop

edit: gimp 3.0 is supposed to bring us adjustment layers when it comes out.

You can install VirtualBox-ose, install windows and PhotoShop in it - no need for reboot.

But there is a catch - You must have enough RAM maybe 2Gb or more to use (the amount needed for Linux 300-500Mb + the amount needed for Windows 200Mb + the amount needed for PhotoShop - as much as possible ).

I am using AutoCAD in VirtualBox .

For a photoshop alike program on Kubuntu use Kritita...is like photoshop and depends on Kde dependencies not gnome like gimp

krita. It's part of the KOffice suite.

                        Re: Graphics art program

I am using gimp 2.71 with one window option:
                        http://www.filerex.com/screenshot/the_gimp-10242.html

and it has been nice and stable.

you can get it with this ppa:
                        ppa:matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn

to install do in a terminal:
                        Code:
                        sudo add-apt-repository ppa:matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn
                        then:
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get install gimp
                        or:
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get update
if you already have it installed

or add it from your favorite package manager and install / update from there.

                        For krita:
                        http://www.koffice.org/krita/

                        it is in the repos.

                        Hope this helps

                            Re: Graphics art program

ok, ive tried all of the above, cept the virtual box thing, dont really think i got the hd space to double install photoshop when i got it on a windows partition. i really like krita, im still trying to learn that and gimp. my issue with gimp tho, is that the ink kinda lags behind my mouse, dunno if its a setting or what, but its annoying me a tad. i really like krita tho, its an overall pretty good program.
