Want to build a new Kubuntu computer.

I love Kubuntu! I just love it! So I naturally want my new build to be very Kubuntu specific. I know there is hardware out there that is very unfriendly to Linux and Kubuntu in general. It would be great if any of you guys can give me some tips about motherboards, processors, graphics cards, and such that are very friendly to Kubuntu and would be a very nice, very fast computer.

I don't really care if it's not the latest and greatest like an i7 and the like. My budget is around $300 give or take; hard drives are already taken care of as is the OS as you can guess. So I need a good box, power supply, motherboard, processor, and graphics card (unless there's something else you can think of that I missed).

Please keep in mind that the ability to play Flash is a must since my wife likes to play games online!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

IMO you're not going to get a lot for $300. However, If you don't need a ton of power you might look at the Asus AT5IONT-I. It is an Atom, but 1.8ghz and dual core.

Pretty much comes with everything except a case. The deluxe model (if you can find it) even includes an external power supply and remote control.

      Hi Charles.

Actually, the only stuff that is really unfriendly nowadays are the oddments of printers , some wifi cards and some scanners. Mainstream "usual suspects" work just fine.

I'd go with a HP multifuntion scanner printer.
      ASUS mobo if possible
i686 type 2400 CPU , although I am running an AMD as I type, there are quite a few "beginner" distros that are only able to deal with Intel chips.
Nvidia, I'd get a second hand 128 or 512 card for cheap AND your dream nvidia dream card to start and get the OS running and then you can install you dream Nvidia card! Get the driver installer onboard first.
Sound....I'd go with the absolute oldest two buck SoundBlaster card I could find and some second hand but LaRGE speakers and whoofer to put under the desk....
A set of sony wired headphones or maybe wireless....
one big drive for Kubuntu and some smaller, maybe NOT cheaper, second hand drives to "distro hop" with and you are ready to go!

With the below case the side is two hand screws to open, unplug one drive and plug in another!

Forget the dual boot thing...just unplug, plug and PLAY!!!

This is my GAME CASE....an X-infinity.....they've been around for YEARS for a reason....rock solid, solid as a rock, usb ports EVERYWHERE..headphone ports top front back you name it... hand screws for every part of the case, weighs A TON!!! but WHISPER QUIET....

Haul this in on your two wheeler at a gamer's all nighter and wait for the ooohs and aaahhsss....... NOBODY else will have one..... Lina Li's are the latest craze....

Lis are "understated"....ummmmm NO...........IN YOUR FACE....I am the TOP DAWG HERE!!!

      'Cause sometimes you feel tired,
feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that s*** out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.

Yo left, yo left, yo left right left
Yo left, yo left, yo left right left
Yo left, yo left, yo left right left
Yo left, yo left, yo left right left

A few years ago....these towers were in the remainder sections...but....they came back because they are just great.....they are a GAMING machine...and have stood the test of time....

ROOMY insides....I've got pulsing neons.... put pulsing fans inside and also a lighted powersupply!

First really serious game machine I ever built!

      Mine is the silver version:

        Hi Charles...

If you are not partial to building your new system from scratch, you can also purchase a new system with Linux already installed and ready to go. System 76 is one such vendor that offers these kind of systems. However, you would need to call them and specifically request Kubuntu and the x64 version of flash player be installed. Or you could install the software yourself. Or, if you have some extra to spend, you can purchase this model from ZaReason which included the option of a preinstalled copy of Kubuntu 11.04.

However, if you want to build your own, hardware from Intel usually works very well.

Maybe dual boot with this since you looking at gaming? Supposedly handles the latest and greatest mobos.

Re: Want to build a new Kubuntu computer.

Thanks for the responses guys! That Infinity case sounds like a great idea! I'll have to consider it when I finally get to ordering the parts.

I was really hasty when I started this topic,. I forgot about the RAM I'd need. And oshunluvr is right, I'm not going to get much for $300. I'm still going to try to keep it in the cheap if I can, but as I've learned from experience: sometimes you simply can't go cheap. I really don't know what I was thinking there.

The graphics card is for video editing and image manipulation. Not for games. The games I'm referring to are very simple online flash games that even a netbook can handle. But my wife loves them! I'm just worried about adobe flash being an issue since I never could get it running good in Ubuntu. Yet, I installed Ubuntu-restricted-extras on this computer (Dell Inspiron 531) and for some reason, that got my flash running the smoothest I've ever seen!

In the past, my computer has been a workhorse and this one will be no different. So I'm hoping to open this up a bit more and give the budget a little more room. I'd like to get a quad core, preferably an Intel, but AMD phenom II's have gotten great reviews and are better on the budget, so I may be going to AMD after all.

I've already got 2 HD's to stick in it, although I'd love to upgrade to an SSD later on. Going to get at least 4gb of RAM. I'm running 3gb right now.

I've worked on computers many times before, so building it isn't the problem. It's finding out what the heck to get! I've never bought a motherboard or processor that wasn't stock before!

                Thanks guys!

Wow woodsmoke that is one slick rig you got there. I really like that grille on top. Is that a Jaguar, BMW, Pontiac?

I have used about every brand of MB out there at one time or another. I have built many computers from scratch. After years of experimentation I now use only Asus MBs. Never had one fail yet.

                        Okay, here's what I've got:

                        ASUS AMD Socket AM3 790X/SB750

                        Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz

                        Sapphire Radeon HD 5570 - 1 GB DDR3

Haven't chose the memory or the case yet.

Re: Want to build a new Kubuntu computer.

If I can sway you away from an ATI video card, I'd like to. Nvidia is much more Kubuntu friendly in my opinion and you can probably find an Nvidia card of comparable price (e.g. 9500GT).

Also, with RAM, there's nothing better for the frugal among us than the Kingston ValueRAM and with linux, 2GB is more than enough anyway.

There are many cases out there that can help you save money. I think the Antec Three Hundred gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

Just my $0.02! I'll be curious to see what the final build (and cost, if you'll disclose) is.
                          Home: Kubuntu 12.04-amd64; Intel i7-860 on Intel DH55PJ; Nvidia 9500GT; 6GB RAM
Network Slave: Xubuntu 11.10-x86; Intel P4-Prescott on MSI; 2GB RAM; Nvidia FX5200
Portable: Xubuntu 11.10-amd64; Asus EeePC 1015PEM

I'll second what rfa said, nvidia is just more friendly to Linux.

I tend to run Kingston myself and have had no problems.

Sounds good to me! I'll do some more checking later. So far though, the cost is less than $250. I'm thinking that after everything is said and done, I'll have spent less than $400 since I've already got the drives.
