Installing Kubuntu 10.04 on blank HDD?

    Installing Kubuntu 10.04 on blank HDD?

    New to Kubuntu here. Here's my problem....
    Hp Pavilion dv6815nr, was running Vista 32bit
    my DVD drive was dropping out, replaced DVD, worked for a while, same thing...not recognized.
    Got it to work, was reinstalling Vista, from recovery disk, and it lost contact with DVD, now no Windows...

    Replaced crap HDD with new WD 500gb
    Made bootable USB drive (which worked on old HDD for install, but instructions said remove disc and reboot, now it just got blank screen with cursor flashing in corner)

    On new HDD, I get following error...

    error: no such device: 6738d9d0-40ca-4b63-9e9f-e3f66d6cc538
    grub rescue>

    I DO NOT want to run dual boot. I want only Kubuntu on this new drive. Besides, I cant install windows on it anyway...DVD drive is still not recognized....


    Thanks, I am still searching the forums, but figured I'd post my problem in the mean time...

    And welcome to a very friendly forum.

    Since you are posting, I assume that you can get "at" a computer.

    I would recommend downloading "gparted" which is very good at a) fiddling with messed up hard drives b) formatting

    If you are on a windblows machine whatever "burner" you use( If you do not HAVE one, please say so) you will find "burning an .iso" at the bottom of whatever menu list.

    Burn the .iso of gparted.

    Run gparted to format the hard drive to whatever you wish, FAT, ntfs, reiser, you name it.

    Then.... install Kubu...

    Check "take the whole disk" and let it do it's thing. It will automatically make a "swap" partition and the "root" partition for you.

    if you have ANY questions, since I'm just an old doof, please post them and they will be answered.

      I recommend you make a Parted Magic Live CD or USB stick. http://download.cnet.com/Parted-Magi...-10663999.html

      Boot Parted Magic and use "Device > New Partition Table" to make a MS-DOS type partition table. Then make a filesystem (ext4 recommended) and a swap partition, and "Apply". Then choose "Information" or "Flags" and set the "boot" flag. "Apply" and you're done.

      Now boot the Kubuntu "Alternate" CD, and install the OS using "manual" partitioning. Just select the mount point for the filesystem and the swap partition, and continue through installation. No need to format anything.

        Thanks for the replies. I understand about half of what you guys are talking about...(I've never had to jump in this deep, but I'm learning!!)

        I apologize for not providing enough details, the machine in question is my laptop. I am using desktop to create all the "pass over" files etc.

        The DVD drive on the laptop is questionable. Sometimes it reads, sometimes it doesn't. Hence the crash during re-format and install of Vista.

        I am doing everything via USB now, in hopes of saving a headache....

        I went ahead and swapped out the HDD for a new, blank WD 500gb. I want to install K/Ubuntu on it as the only OS.

        I did in fact install Kubuntu on the old HDD, but after the instrall, it said to remove the disk and reboot, well I did, and nothing happened.

        So the parted magic, or gparted will condition the new HDD and allow me to install K/Ubuntu from the USB thumbdrive correct?


        I will give it a shot and see.

          Which partition is the boot flag set on?

          UPDATE:
          I got it installed, and it boots, BUT ONLY IF THE THUMBDRIVE IS PLUGGED IN....
          Installation instructions say to remove disk and reboot. I tried that but all I got was the blinking cursor in the upper left. I even tried again after changing the boot sequence back to harddrive...still same. Put USB drive back in, changed back to USB boot, and up it came...slow, but there.

          I'll keep messing with it.....

            That's an easy error to make, even for not-so-noobs. When you got to the end of the installation routine, and it offered to install Grub, you accepted the default. When working from a USB stick, the default is to install Grub to the MBR of the USB stick. But you didn't want that, you wanted it on the MBR of your new hdd.

            So, your choice is to reinstall, this time stopping at the final step and changing the target drive for Grub installation to your hdd, or else follow the procedure to install grub-pc to the hdd. I can give you that if you prefer this method, or you can practice your installation technique (again).

              Cant he just reinstall grub in the new HDD by sudo install grub and sudo update grub.??
