I tried for you on my netbook (with Kde 4.6.2, without Medibuntu) to play one wmv file. It works in Xine, VLC,Gnome MPlayer and Dragon. In Kaffeine I got an error. So I think it is a bug of Kaffeine and cannot be repaired by your action.

Kaffeine was a very good program in Kde 3, in Kde 4 it lost most of its power.

I will draw a line under this and will revisit it again if the software is ever updated

I can play them in Xine and VLC so not a show stopper
