    A few little problems

    Hi.

i have kubuntu now for a few days and i like it alot. only i have a few little problems. Hope that someone can help me.

First the information about my pc.

    Motherboard: Asus M3A78-EM
    CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) 4550 (Quad-Core - 2.2Ghz)
    Memory: 8GB
    Video: Nvidia 8800ultra
Sound: Creative Labs[SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] (PCIe)
    Keyboard: Logitech G19 Keyboard
    Mouse: Razer Naga
    disks: sda(1.0TB) - Kubuntu format & sdb(250GB) - NTFS(shared with my virtual windows7)

    OS: Linux 2.6.38-8-generic
    GUI - Kubuntu (11.04 - Natty) KDE - 4.6.2

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All my hardware work fine with no errors.

    Software problems that i have:

    1. All browsers that i have installed (rekonq, google chrome, Mozilla firefox). They all can't load any page that require's a media player plugin or need silverlight . Some lets me see a player bet play button don't work others just say no plugin installed. The following sites that i tested: http://www.nederland.fm (require media player) http://www.uitzendinggemist.nl (require silverlight).

    2. When want to set up my screensaver many times when i tested them and want to test another one i see that he start them but he don't let me see the screensaver i stell see the desktop(only a little dark)

    3. When i'm browsing and go back i can't click antmore in the site. i need to refresh it almost all the time.

    4. Almost everytime i shut down my pc i get an error about kmail or dolphin or software for my keyboard (always another program).

For the rest: Everything works fine.

The package flash-player-installer from Adobe is in the repos, Silverlight can be installed from Microsoft, just follow the links in the browser, but it is based on Mono - some Kubuntu users don't want to see it on their computers.

      Hi,

on the first problem: Most of the time I find that the browsers need to refresh the page (pressing F5 of the refresh icon) to start the flash or media player. I have tested your http://www.nederland.fm link and it works without problem after doing that.
As for silverlight - which is a Micro$olf proprietary application - you can try to install Moonlight which is a Mono implementation of silverlight for linux.

As for the screensaver, it may be a problem related with your video driver. I don't have any problem with the screensaver but I'm using nvidia proprietary driver (if you want to try get it from nvidia site BUT keep a copy of your present /etc/xorg.conf file and look at the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log if you have problems. Beware that if anything doesn't go well in the installation you won't have a Xwindows system, just the terminal).

      Happy kubunting!

For playing windows media player videos I think he also needs gnome mplayer. At least this is how it works here on my pc. Windows media player is replaced with gnome mplayer in browser.

So in KPackageKit find gecko-mediaplayer and gnome-mplayer packages and install them

It will be automatically installed since gecko-mediaplayer depends on gnome-mplayer :P.

I never got uitzendinggemist.nl to work, because Mono is always a version behind. The new site is streaming everything in flash too. That site is not yet complete, but at least in the near future you can watch public broadcoasting without being forced to use Microsofts not working Silverlight.
However, flash on that site doesn't work for me in Firefox. Didn't try very hard, because I've also Google Chrome installed, and in Google Chrome flash on the new site of uitzendinggemist.nl is working.
Maybe mono (Silverlight) is working for you, but as far as I know nobody got it working on this site. So if Mono's not working, you could try Google Chrome with flash.

In Kubuntu repos is an old Lucid version of Silverlite (Moonlight version 2) plugin.

From Microsoft web site http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverli...l/Default.aspx you can get version 4 from 12.4.2011, maybe it might work, especially when there is a warning there: Be aware that many sites require more recent silverlight API/functionality, and will not work with Moonlight 2.
